Looking at the frills of dark cloud in front of the yellow-grey sunset sky on the A43 and A422, I thought 'Life is sweet and I shall be sorry to die.' A real change from some of my holidays, 2008-11 say, when it was more a matter of 'I don't care if it kills me.' Wind turbines turning serenely in the yellow-grey westering sun, really quite beautiful.

Dim dark dull day, the first this autumn where I've had to put the lights on as soon as I got home. Autumn really has crept up on me this year, I still half expect it to be August.

The pound had a 'flash crash' against the dollar early today, and although the pro-Leave people were trying to gloss this over, it didn't recover completely. Went for final therapy session - it was her last day on the job, too, so we were both feeling very positive and parted on excellent terms.

Many people reaching the conclusion I did yesterday about the link between Jo Cox being killed and the atmosphere created by the Leave campaign.

While it was thundering in the afternoon I impressed everyone with the lightning monitoring site. Home in renewed rain.

It started raining just before I left at 7.30, and it got quite heavy, but fortunately it was just a shower, and by the time I got to work I'd dried off.

A light, irregular tapping noise behind the bed has been going on for some weeks. I checked for ceiling drips, but found nothing, and went off to work rather perturbed. When I got home I found it was just the loose TV aerial cable whapping against the wall in the wind.

Stormy night. Absolutely tipping it down at times in the morning - had to wade ankle-deep in Harbour Road. But my usual precautions - dry clothes in rucksack inside 3 layers of plastic - worked well. NB in future to note days when high tide is near 8am, as that's what makes the storm drains back up.

Aggravation continued in the afternoon - flood had closed Harbour Road, and just as in the morning there'd been floods in unprecedented places, now there were traffic jams in unprecedented places.

Observed the transit of Mercury. That was frustrating at first, because I didn't set the tripod up properly or test focus on something terrestrial or cut my home-made aperture stop properly to size. When I'd done all these things I was rewarded with a fine projection of the Sun, and Mercury sharp and clear, very small. You could see clouds passing over the sun too. First time I've tried projection, I was really pleased with it.

I thought btw that I'd seen Mercury, and a scratch on the eyepiece. But all the pro photos have the 'scratch' too - apparently it's a sunspot group. I've not seen a sunspot before. Bonus!

Really wet in the morning, one of the wettest walks to work I've ever had, and quite windy too. The path across the park was more like a stream!
I prepared really well though, I put dry clothes, and my handbag, in double plastic bags in my big rucksack, and walked to work in my jogging trousers. Had to wring them out when I got there, but everything else was nice and dry. After changing I was fine, and my external stuff dried off fine. NB next time to take a small towel for my legs.

TWELFTH NIGHT. Interesting weather in the morning with fog coming up quite suddenly at 8.15am.

Have been transcribing the 'Weather Diaries' that I kept in scribbling diary books from 1985 to 1988. (I've mentioned this before, haven't I?) It's very interesting, because I can tie in the observations to the main diary. For instance one night, at the end of Thursday, there's an '0000 (Fri)' entry, and the main diary has me coming back from an evening at S's at 12.05am. (Ah, August 1986).

Should point out that these Weather Diaries are not to be confused with my Weather Diaries blog, which I'm compiling as I type up the main diaries.

Really unpleasant cold, windy, rainy weather. Didn't really want to go into town, but was obliged to really, and it would've been a waste of my early brunch.
