Monday, December 31, 2001

Lovely bright day but very cold with frost and last night's snow on the ground.

Sunday, December 30, 2001

Very cold today.

Saturday, December 29, 2001

Drove back under cold, round white Full Moon.

Wednesday, December 26, 2001

Very cold today.

Sunday, December 23, 2001

Very cold indeed.

Saturday, December 22, 2001

Even colder, with stiff breeze and whirling snow in the evening.

Friday, December 21, 2001

Very cold today, with rain.

Thursday, December 20, 2001

Weather very cold, very clear.

Tuesday, December 18, 2001

Went to Clacton and looked out from the cliff. Rays of low sunlight slanting through vast spaces down to the silver winter sea. Glad I went.

Friday, December 14, 2001

Another beautiful clear day, but very cold.

Thursday, December 13, 2001

Drove to work as it was raining.

Wednesday, December 12, 2001

Still cold, but cloudy - rippling, smooth, low 'scarf-like' clouds in the morning.

Tuesday, December 11, 2001

Another beautiful clear day after a foggy start. In the evening stars very bright.

Monday, December 10, 2001

Beautifully cold & clear again.

Sunday, December 09, 2001

Very cold today.

Saturday, December 08, 2001

Another clear, cold, bright day, with a kind of 'faded' quality to the light, like 70s TV footage.

Friday, December 07, 2001

Cold and clear again. Strikingly clear in the evening: five Pleiades clearly visible, despite the light pollution.

Thursday, December 06, 2001

Cold, dry, clear, really wintry.

Wednesday, December 05, 2001

Very windy in the evening.

Sunday, December 02, 2001

Very cold and dry in the morning. Reminded me strongly of the day after the party in Hatfield in December 1991.

Saturday, December 01, 2001

Grey and drizzling at first, but by midday the clouds had broken up and the Sun was visible again, with deep blue sky. Most cheering. Felt very light-hearted.

Friday, November 30, 2001

Last day of autumn. Rather mild but also rather wet. One of those pink-flushed grey skies around sunset.

Thursday, November 29, 2001

Raining most of the day.

Wednesday, November 28, 2001

Very cold today. Wonderful '18th-century' full moon in cloud-wrack behind bare black trees when I left at 5pm.

Tuesday, November 27, 2001

Heavy frost in the morning. By the evening it had clouded over and heavy cold rain was falling as I walked home.

Monday, November 26, 2001

Clear and cold - wonderfully clear in fact, with vivid autumn colours. Sunset sky of such clarity that I was able to watch the sun set and look out for the 'green flash'. Didn't see it.

Sunday, November 25, 2001

Weather beautiful first thing, but clouded over horribly and started raining.

Saturday, November 24, 2001

Gloomy, damp weather. My mood pretty good though.

Thursday, November 22, 2001

Colder today. Not quite so dull though - a number of sun-breaks to make the leaves on the tree outside glow with orange fire.

Sunday, November 18, 2001

Dismal weather again.

Saturday, November 17, 2001

Miserable dark, drizzly weather.

Thursday, November 15, 2001

Cold and clear again. Wonderful 'spacious' sunset, cloudless, yellow/gold/orange at the horizon shading off through pink and green to blue, dark blue and black.

Wednesday, November 14, 2001

Very cold today.

Monday, November 12, 2001

Rotten weather - dark, dim, damp & dull in the morning. Felt quite subdued. It was raining, too, but as there was no wind, walked to work with an umbrella.

Friday, November 09, 2001

Very cold indeed today, with heavy showers.

Thursday, November 08, 2001

Very cold and very windy - north wind - and raining in the morning. Snow shower at lunchtime.

Wednesday, November 07, 2001

Cold again. At lunchtime that winter brightness to the half-cloudy sky. Later a black, windy evening.

Tuesday, November 06, 2001

Still cold, but good walking weather.

Monday, November 05, 2001

Cold day with hard, bright sky and sunlight. Again very reminiscent of 1999.

Saturday, November 03, 2001

'Hard' blue sky and sun.

Thursday, November 01, 2001

Another wonderful clear day, and colder again.

Wednesday, October 31, 2001

Very clear weather, and quite a lot colder than yesterday, with a stiff breeze. About 5pm a wonderful full moon, floating above the fields.

Tuesday, October 30, 2001

Wonderful clear, slightly hazy mellow day (apparently this is the warmest October on record).

'With a CET of 13.3C, easily the warmest [October] ever recorded! Goodbye 1969. In some places, October was warmer than September 2001' [...]

Monday, October 29, 2001

Quite cool weather today. Wonderful sunset with dark flat grey clouds illuminated underneath in deep red.

Sunday, October 28, 2001

Beautiful 'hard' blue-sky weather.

Saturday, October 27, 2001

Bright, cold morning.

Friday, October 26, 2001

One of those 'cosy' very dark, dry, not too cold days, windy, which I rather like.

Drove home at 9.45pm with Andy Kershaw on again. Wonderful to be transported from cold, dark Colchester to the tropics.

Wednesday, October 24, 2001

Heavy rain in the morning, but rather nice by lunchtime with big white cumulus.

Monday, October 22, 2001

Sun came out in the morning, thank God. Very mild day in fact.

Sunday, October 21, 2001

Another day of rotten weather. No sign of the sun, and heavy rain. In fact torrential rain at lunchtime when I was on the A12: for some minutes it was impossible to go faster than 40 mph.

Saturday, October 20, 2001

Gloomy day with a lot of rain. Couple of glimpses of the sun around sunset.

Friday, October 19, 2001

Misty, mellow day. Leaves well on the turn now.

October - there's a cosy element of the first year at uni about my associations, but there's a lot of 1991 in there too: before I got so drunk and desperate - the new computer and bright hopes.

Thursday, October 18, 2001

Sun came out again in the afternoon - quite an improvement.

Wednesday, October 17, 2001

Misty start.

Monday, October 15, 2001

Dark, rainy morning.

Sunday, October 14, 2001

Damp, foggy morning: church absolutely packed for Boys' Brigade centenary.

Saturday, October 13, 2001

Another warm, hazy, mellow day.

Friday, October 12, 2001

'Cosy' fog in the morning, thinning all day till a beautiful, mellow, hazy autumn afternoon. Kind of reprise of summer. Actually saw the 'sun shining through ground glass' effect.

By the way, a few days ago saw a parhelion (false sun).

Thursday, October 11, 2001

Grey weather again.

Tuesday, October 09, 2001

Clouds & clear gaps today.

Monday, October 08, 2001

Blowy day with heavy, cold rain at times.

Sunday, October 07, 2001

Weather wild and windy, wet too later. Appropriately stayed in and listened to The Tempest on Radio 3.

Friday, October 05, 2001

Another beautiful, mellow, sunny day. The 'reflection of spring' effect in the morning - enough green leaves and slanting light to be an early May morning. Later though a hard edge to the blue sky that reminded me of the fearful mornings of two years ago.

Wednesday, October 03, 2001

Clear, cool, sunny day with fair-weather cumuli sailing high. Leaves just turning, and the vivid colours especially clear in the strong sunlight and against the bright sky. Perhaps recalling the leaves on the Eastchester ring road in autumn 1988.

Tuesday, October 02, 2001

Dark and raining hard in the morning, but perfectly calm, so took umbrella and walked. Wind and rain would've been sufficient excuse to take the car.

I was a little uncomfortable with the return of dark evenings, but was OK.

Sunday, September 30, 2001

Rather autumnal weather - rain in the morning, and wind, and dead leaves flying past the church windows. Interestingly windy in the evening.

Saturday, September 29, 2001

Pouring with rain in the morning. Waited for a dry spell to go into town - it started raining again as I walked. Doh!

Friday, September 28, 2001

Lovely mellow, warm weather today.

Tuesday, September 25, 2001

Rather nice weather, mellow and hazy.

Monday, September 24, 2001

Last night and tonight, silent purple sky flashes to the SE. Made the radio crackle like lightning does, but there was no thunder. Odd.

Saturday, September 22, 2001

Return of summery weather today, up to a point, though it was cold in the morning.

Friday, September 21, 2001

Weather definitely Septembral now. Very much reminiscent of going away to uni.

Thursday, September 20, 2001

Enjoyed leaning out of the window to watch the rain falling in the afternoon.

Tuesday, September 18, 2001

Rained most of the day. It was pleasant to listen to the rain while in bed, and during the morning to see it beating on the windows while I was assembling my new chest of drawers. Not so pleasant walking back from town in it when it started again in the afternoon.

Monday, September 17, 2001

Rainy, windy day - rather interesting weather.

Sunday, September 16, 2001

Lovely cool, sunny, blue & white breezy morning.

Saturday, September 15, 2001

A bright sunny day. Heavy rain in the evening.

Wednesday, September 12, 2001

Dark, dim weather most of the day - quite bright at lunchtime though.

World Trade Centre collapse dominating news again all day.

Sunday, September 09, 2001

Wonderful pre-dawn clear sky at 4.30 am, dark blue shading through turquoise to yellow, and Venus bright on the blue - Eala Earendel eongla beorhtast!

Saturday, September 08, 2001

Cold front passed over in the early afternoon.

Wednesday, September 05, 2001

Clear, sunny start, but greyed over, with rain, for an autumnal if not wintry feel.

Tuesday, September 04, 2001

Very much colder and greyer today, with stiff North wind. Brought coat out of summer storage.

Sunday, September 02, 2001

Weather grey and dull.

Friday, August 31, 2001

Grey start but really brightened up later, with some excellent rain falling through sunshine about 3.30pm.

Thursday, August 30, 2001

Grey and cool today with rain later. Felt the end-of-summer feeling I had yesterday, and this time last year, again. It's not quite melancholy but more a form of contraction - drawing in, to face the winter.

Interesting programme on Radio 4 claiming the Lynmouth flood in 1952 was caused by experimental cloud seeding.

Wednesday, August 29, 2001

Cooler and bright again.

Tuesday, August 28, 2001

Bright and cooler again; out of the sun, almost chilly. Saw rowan berries out. Autumn sort of clearing its throat in the wings at the moment.

Monday, August 27, 2001

Bright and cooler, with fair-weather clouds.

Sunday, August 26, 2001

Dull grey morning.

Just before 2pm it got extremely dark - street lights came on. Three good lightning flashes (one nice fork) and some hours of heavy rain. Not bad. Never seen a storm make it so dark before.

Saturday, August 25, 2001

Wonderful day today - another hot, mellow, hazy one.

Marvellous, understated post-sunset sky, dark lavender with darker flat cirrostratus shaded onto it, like something from a Jack Vance novel. Felt as if God were saying 'I can show you many more like these, if you stick with me.'

Friday, August 24, 2001

Lovely mellow, hazy late summer day.

Sunday, August 19, 2001

Misjudged the weather in the morning and got soaked on the way to church.

Saturday, August 18, 2001

Climactic discussion with G. Memorable image: looking out of the window at the misty, rainy grey August dusk and seeing it as healing rain, which it seems to've been.

Friday, August 17, 2001

Good weather, hot but breezy with fair-weather cumuli and a high cloud base.

Thursday, August 16, 2001

Good thunderstorm about 12.30 am - so the altocumulus castellanus yesterday didn't come to nothing after all.

Pretty hot and sunny again today with heavy rain about 6.30pm.

Wednesday, August 15, 2001

Absolutely gorgeous weather - really hot, very few clouds, quite humid though, ~ 70%. Some altocumulus castellanus in the afternoon, but came to nothing. Turns out C is very interested in clouds.

Tuesday, August 14, 2001

Grey start but turning into a mellow, sunny day and beautiful clear evening with Arcturus prominent in the West. Autumn on its way.

Sunday, August 12, 2001

Rained heavily all morning and up till about 1pm.

Saturday, August 11, 2001

Lovely weather.

Thursday, August 09, 2001

Lots of thundery rain.

Wednesday, August 08, 2001

Driving to my appointment in the afternoon, followed an excellent cumulo-nimbus with anvil top and virgae all the way. Beyond it there was a superb bank of towering cumulus, distant but very detailed, sharp structure.

Tuesday, August 07, 2001

Beautiful weather to start with, but damp and gloomy later, with heavy rain about 4pm.

Monday, August 06, 2001

Cooler and greyer in the morning. Violent thunderstorm 1645-1730. Lots of stones washed out of the hotel car park and into the road again.

Sunday, August 05, 2001

Turned out nice after overnight rain.

Saturday, August 04, 2001

Nice weather in the morning, coolish with blue sky/white clouds. Rained in the afternoon and evening.

Friday, August 03, 2001

Started cool, hazy and grey, but I had a feeling it'd warm up, and it did. Found excellent website with different cloud type photos.

Thursday, August 02, 2001

Cooler today with rain in the afternoon and heavy rain in the evening. Makes a change.

Wednesday, August 01, 2001

Very suitable weather for the date - gorgeous, with only tiny clouds most of the day.

Tuesday, July 31, 2001

Started off gorgeous again, clouded over quickly in the afternoon and was cooler, 'which was nice'.

Monday, July 30, 2001

Really very hot today, gorgeous weather.

Sunday, July 29, 2001

Extremely hot and with a hot breeze too.

Saturday, July 28, 2001

Beautiful morning, even more calm and cloudless than yesterday.

Friday, July 27, 2001

Slept with the windows open last night - cool but lots of traffic noise.

Beautiful weather again today. Absolutely flat calm at 7.30am, and cloudless. Very hot later - cool green shade under trees on way home much appreciated.85[s deg]F in here now.

Thursday, July 26, 2001

Started off deceptively cool and grey, became very hot later.

Wednesday, July 25, 2001

Beautiful weather, with high clouds taking some of the edge off the heat of the sun.

Tuesday, July 24, 2001

Lovely weather - really quite hot.

Monday, July 23, 2001

Beautiful weather, so decided to go to Felixstowe. Positively idyllic, with lovely herbal scent from cliff gardens, sparkling sea and just the right strength breeze.

But there was a bonfirey, autumn smell inland, and the tiniest touch of autumn in the evening air outside afterwards.

Tuesday, July 17, 2001

Impressive rain from about 2.30pm, still raining at 10pm.

Monday, July 16, 2001

Large clouds in the morning, sort of uneasily good weather till 3.30pm, when there were very heavy showers.

Sunday, July 15, 2001

Beautiful morning, got cloudier later but still a lovely day. And not too hot.

Friday, July 13, 2001

Came on to rain in the morning, very heavy, but no wind, so it feel straight down and I was able to keep the window open and look out and enjoy it. Very cosy.

Thursday, July 12, 2001

Flawless at 7 am - real 'deep one perfect morning' - ideal summer morning.

Wednesday, July 11, 2001

Very windy day.

Tuesday, July 10, 2001

Day of wind, rain and big grey clouds. But by 9pm the weather was clear and cool with summer scents.

Sunday, July 08, 2001

Cooler again but drizzling in the morning.

Saturday, July 07, 2001

Cooler today. Very dull and gloomy and damp too, with rain in the afternoon and evening.

Friday, July 06, 2001

Rotten night's sleep - far too hot even with windows open.

Thursday, July 05, 2001

Very hot again.

Wednesday, July 04, 2001

Gorgeous weather, even hotter.

Tuesday, July 03, 2001

Wonderful weather, cloudless and hot but with a strong breeze. Staff picnic rather good fun - a couple of women going round with trays of strawberries. A bit like a Breughel painting, or something from Thomas Hardy.

Monday, July 02, 2001

Beautiful weather again - too hot to be wearing a jacket really.

Thursday, June 28, 2001

Beautiful cloudless morning.

Wednesday, June 27, 2001

Couple of great thunderstorms in the night. First one at about 0100 the best - almost continuous rumbling, moving about 15mph, came as close as 2 miles. Usual mixture of scientific curiosity and being frightened.

Morning came, hot and clammy.

Tuesday, June 26, 2001

Very hot again, quite cirrussy with traces of altocumulus castellanus in the morning. Sun very high in the sky. After work once again trudged home in the heat.

Monday, June 25, 2001

Weather like yesterday, gorgeous and almost too hot. Read the Alfred Douglas biography at lunchtime in the empty, sunny library looking West across the summer valley.

Trudged home in the sun and dust. Very glad to get inside into the cool stairwell at home - and glad I drew the curtains before I went out in the morning, to keep the sun off.

Later rather peaceful with blue sky and evening sun on the leaves outside.

Sunday, June 24, 2001

Beautiful weather all day, cloudless most of the day. Had all the windows open and sun streaming in.

Saturday, June 23, 2001

Came home in lovely summer evening. Even a cricket match being played near Bicknacre.

Friday, June 22, 2001

Another beautiful start to the day, but it clouded right over later.

Thursday, June 21, 2001

Exceptionally nice weather: cloudless and hot with a delicious northerly breeze to take the edge off it.

Wednesday, June 20, 2001

Beautiful weather, rather too hot at times. Sun very high in the sky - was able to have my bath with the light off. Was suddenly reminded of rushing back from the pub to my student room in 1991, to see if the sun was far enough round in the North-west to be visible therefrom at sunset.

Tuesday, June 19, 2001

Lovely weather.

Monday, June 18, 2001

Bright at times but rather cold.

Sunday, June 17, 2001

Gloomy, wet, cold day, brightening up later while I was at evening service - Communion celebrated by J. With so few people communion seemed to have extra power, and I felt God's presence more strongly, I think, than any time since my first communion. As if to underline this, the Sun broke through the clouds and shone down on us all as we knelt at the rail.

Saturday, June 16, 2001

Waited in the rain for M. to turn up at the rendezvous - a bit like the rainy Saturday in Sid's Mystery Tours.

Heavy showers all day. One lightning flash 0.6 miles away in the afternoon, real clap of thunder with that one.

Friday, June 15, 2001

Another hot day.

Thursday, June 14, 2001

Weather hot again - rain in the evening.

Monday, June 11, 2001

Lovely bright, clear morning - went right off in the afternoon.

Sunday, June 10, 2001

Cold, grey weather.

Saturday, June 09, 2001

Lovely weather in the morning.

Thursday, June 07, 2001

Clear and sunny in the monring, turning grey and rainy later.

Wednesday, June 06, 2001

Grey and windy.

Tuesday, June 05, 2001

Grey in the morning, brighter later, then grey again with damp smell and feeling of impending rain.

Sunday, June 03, 2001

Weather very cold, windy. Had to start wearing a coat again.

Saturday, June 02, 2001

Grey, windy morning.

Friday, June 01, 2001

Weather grey, cool and windy.

Thursday, May 31, 2001

Perhaps lovely weather coming to an end - nice in the morning, clouding in the afternoon, clear again in the evening.

Wednesday, May 30, 2001

Very hot again. Some small cumulus cells about in the morning, some promising development later, but they'd all flattened out in the afternoon.

Tuesday, May 29, 2001

Lovely weather.

Saturday, May 26, 2001

Still sunny but hazy, and a bit close.

Friday, May 25, 2001

Grey start but it was obviously going to brighten up, and it did.

Thursday, May 24, 2001

Lovely weather again. Rather nice evening - slanting light and greenery, and birdsong.

Wednesday, May 23, 2001

First really hot night of the year. Bit of a pain but also a kind of languid tropical ease.

Tuesday, May 22, 2001

Beautiful weather but quite windy.

Monday, May 21, 2001

Lovely weather, if a bit cool.

Saturday, May 19, 2001

Grey, cold weather of the last few days ended quite abruptly about 11 am.

Friday, May 18, 2001

Grey morning, but weather improved after eleven.

Thursday, May 17, 2001

Windy - very windy in the afternoon. Rain too, but fortunately not when I was walking to work or back again. Very cold too.

Wednesday, May 16, 2001

Rain and sun interchanging today. In the library at lunchtime rain beating on the glass, and far away a sun-break advancing across the woods on the other side of the river.

Tuesday, May 15, 2001

Rather dull, grey, damp and cold in the morning. Fortunately the sun came out before lunch, and I cheered up.

Monday, May 14, 2001

Damp, grey morning. Very verdant though; tree outside my window a positive viridian glare. Started raining about 1pm, pouring at 7pm, still going at 9.30.

Sunday, May 13, 2001

Weather fine in the morning, clouding over and getting damper later.

Saturday, May 12, 2001

Weather still quite gorgeous - hot and cloudless.

Friday, May 11, 2001

Weather marvellous again. Dispensed with coat for walk to work for first time this year.

Thursday, May 10, 2001

Another beautiful hot day. Very calm and pleasant in the warm evening.

Wednesday, May 09, 2001

Cold and grey in the morning but brightened to another lovely day.

Tuesday, May 08, 2001

Beautiful weather - flawless. Went to see my counsellor: lovely drive there through the countryside, really quite verdant now with only the largest trees still looking wintry. As I said to her, it's a good metaphor for my psyche.

Monday, May 07, 2001

Utterly lovely Bank Holiday weather.

Sunday, May 06, 2001

Bright, windy evening.

Saturday, May 05, 2001

Lovely picture-book weather with blue sky and big white clouds.

Friday, May 04, 2001

Evening very nice, with that April/May quality of light I like.

Thursday, May 03, 2001

Cloudless sky in the morning - clouded over later, but lovely while it lasted.

Wednesday, May 02, 2001

Thunder at one point with great big raindrops.

Tuesday, May 01, 2001

Gloomy weather - quite dark & wintry in the afternoon. Freezing rain on walk home.

Sunday, April 29, 2001

Raining very heavily in the morning. In the evening wonderful sunset just visible beyond receding Western hem of cloud cover.

Saturday, April 28, 2001

In the morning interesting showery weather. Lovely in the afternoon.

Thursday, April 26, 2001

Another interesting showery day.

Wednesday, April 25, 2001

Rainy start. In the afternoon sunny, green trees and grass, blue sky and wet black road.

Tuesday, April 24, 2001

Lovely clear evening after a rainy afternoon.

Monday, April 23, 2001

Lovely spring evening.

Saturday, April 21, 2001

Sunny and quite warm, rather nice. Hail at lunchtime.

Friday, April 20, 2001

Weather very interesting with hail and squalls, latter with very strong gusts of wind.

In the evening a huge shower came up from the East (as they had been all day). The front was lit brown and gold, with 'rain-brooms' hanging all the way down it. In the West the sun was setting between flat clouds, and the wind was gusting very strong. Feeling of being in a picture or film or story - the evening light is getting to that late April/May quality that reminds me of something elusive.

Thursday, April 19, 2001

Still cold, still bright.

Wednesday, April 18, 2001

Very cold wind in the morning, but bright and sunny.

Tuesday, April 17, 2001

Lovely weather.

Friday, April 13, 2001

Good Friday. Up early to lovely picture-book weather.

Wednesday, April 11, 2001

Lovely weather - sunny and windy.

Sunday, April 08, 2001

Lovely weather in the morning, quite enthusiastic at church.

Saturday, April 07, 2001

Terrible nightmare in the early hours, woke up suddenly. Looked outside, the full moon was shining peacefully; calmed down.

Lovely weather with big white clouds till about 5pm when it began raining. Wonderful smell of spring rain in the evening.

Thursday, April 05, 2001

Fine in the morning, windy and rainy later. Walked home in cold, driving rain, fortunately coming from behind me.

Wednesday, April 04, 2001

Interesting weather, grey in the morning but windy, and clearing later to a beautiful evening sky.

Tuesday, April 03, 2001

Lovely weather again, very taken with the deep blue sky and white clouds.

Monday, April 02, 2001

Wonderful weather again. Came on to rain in the evening: dusty damp smell as it started very evocative. Also the rain on the roof when I got home.

Sunday, April 01, 2001

Lovely weather. Definitely spring-like.

Saturday, March 31, 2001

Beautiful weather, with actually a warm wind.

Friday, March 30, 2001

Lovely weather - sun, big white clouds.

Thursday, March 29, 2001

Interesting weather again - heavy showers. Looking out about 1.45 saw well-developed, close, large clouds and looking 'fresh' with blurry edges - I thought 'heavy showers this afternoon.' Duly one such at 2.30, with hail.

Wednesday, March 28, 2001

Interesting weather today - heavy rain and wind. Some great effects in the afternoon with half the sky dark, and rain coming down in buckets, the other half lightening up. Love it when that happens.

Tuesday, March 27, 2001

Still no sunshine today - dull weather continuing.

Monday, March 26, 2001

Raining in the morning so drove to work. Wish the sun would come out - we've had miserable weather recently.

Sunday, March 25, 2001

Grey, windy, cold day.

Friday, March 23, 2001

Raining hard in the morning.

Wednesday, March 21, 2001

Rain mixed with ice pellets in the morning, was glad of the car.

Tuesday, March 20, 2001

Enjoyably windy & cold today. Daffodils outside the window at work a real joy to behold.

Friday, March 16, 2001

In the early afternoon the weather turned cold, with a biting East wind.

Thursday, March 15, 2001

Rained so didn't go out much.

Monday, March 12, 2001

Beautiful weather - sun, blue sky and fleets of cumulus. But in the afternoon, heavy rain from the west.

Friday, March 09, 2001

Fresh smell in the air today, like Spring. In the evening a wonderful bright full moon - like summer with the damp breeze, and sky with cirrocumulus like daytime seen through blue glass.

Thursday, March 08, 2001

Started raining at 8.50am, rained all day, still going at 8.50pm.

Tuesday, March 06, 2001

Bright, sunny weather. Was going to write 'almost Spring-like' but then, it is Spring.

Friday, March 02, 2001

Snowed during the evening meeting, and stuck. On the way home it 'flowed down in ever-denser clouds'. All of a sudden it began sticking in the road and 3rd gear became a necessity, then 2nd. Found myself in a blizzard with visibility less than 10 yds. Was lucky to get down the hill without slipping and just as lucky to get up the other side. Proceeded with extreme caution home. Even had trouble getting up the drive. Can't remember proper snow this late in the year before.

March 3rd. Bright sun in the morning with snow still lying, but thaw underway.

'A very cold, snowy start' [...]

Thursday, March 01, 2001

Snowed in the afternoon, quite thickly, but didn't lie.

Wednesday, February 28, 2001

Sort of raining and snowing simultaneously in the morning. Dismal.

Monday, February 26, 2001

Some nice dusty sunlight on the way to work, but very cold SE wind.

Sunday, February 25, 2001

Covering of snow in the morning - bright sunny day but very cold. Nice morning for churchgoing.

Saturday, February 24, 2001

Beautiful day again but very cold.

Friday, February 23, 2001

Rather nice day - wind, sun, lots of fast-moving clouds - but cold, with a snow shower in the evening.

Monday, February 19, 2001

Very cold, and grey.

February 20th. Cold again.

Sunday, February 18, 2001

Hazy sunshine, pressure still very high.

Friday, February 16, 2001

Dull in the morning, cleared and brightened in the afternoon.

Thursday, February 15, 2001

Thick fog in the morning, thicker in the afternoon with visibility less than 100yds, I reckon.

Wednesday, February 14, 2001

Beautiful weather again, barometer still very high and steady at 1043 mb.

Thursday, February 08, 2001

February 2001

Raining hard in the morning. The water-meadows between campus and the river were flooded by the afternoon, and got visibly more flooded as the day continued.

9th. Cold & bright. Water-meadows even more impressive today, with the sunset reflecting off them.

12th. Heavy rain most of the day, and very dark.

13th. Bright, totally clear morning: so nice that I walked to work even though I'd intended to drive. Beautiful evening, hints of summer as I walked home.

'Wet and sunny; particularly wet in the SE' [...]

Tuesday, February 06, 2001

Weather rather good today - sun and strong wind. Went for a drive: had to turn back, faced by floods, on two different routes across the river valley.

Thursday, February 01, 2001

Very foggy and cold in the morning.

Tuesday, January 30, 2001

Abominably cold again, with rain in the afternoon.

Monday, January 29, 2001

Very cold indeed all day.

Sunday, January 28, 2001

Excellent weather - cold & clear.

Saturday, January 27, 2001

To Frinton. Rather cold with stiff onshore breeze, sea rather beautiful, silver in fact.

Friday, January 26, 2001

Got soaked walking home, nice to get in and get dried and warmed up.

Thursday, January 25, 2001

Sky quite light when I was walking home - very encouraging as I would love to be out of the 'perpetual night' thing one gets during the week Nov-Jan.

Wednesday, January 24, 2001

Bright, sunny day - not too cold either. Big improvement.

Tuesday, January 23, 2001

Didn't half rain in the evening. Find the sound of rain on a roof (when I'm inside) very comforting.

Monday, January 22, 2001

Wet, dismal morning.

Sunday, January 21, 2001

Very wet - rain almost all day.

Saturday, January 20, 2001

Very cold, foggy, grey, yesterday's snow still lying, and outlining the trees in white. Thick fog in the evening.

Friday, January 19, 2001

Cold again but grey: began to snow at lunchtime and came down all afternoon and evening in big flakes. Wonderful view West about 4pm from the top of the steps: trees black, grass white to grey, distance grey and dim with falling snow.

Thursday, January 18, 2001

Very cold again.

Wednesday, January 17, 2001

Huge round red sun on horizon at 4pm.

Tuesday, January 16, 2001

Very cold and clear. Walking home in the sunset afterglow, I didn't find the sunset depressing because I knew the sun'd come up tomorrow.

Monday, January 15, 2001

At 3.30 rather nice round red sun above the winter fields.

Sunday, January 14, 2001

Another beautiful day - clouded over at 5pm but dramatically, so even that was good.

Saturday, January 13, 2001

Pressure very high at 1042 mb/30.7 in. Certainly a beautiful clear day all day, and a wonderful starry night. Venus, Jupiter and Saturn all on show - latter close to Hyades and Aldebaran.

Friday, January 12, 2001

Cold and grey, with the same dry East wind straight from Siberia.

Thursday, January 11, 2001

Cold again, with a dry East wind.

Wednesday, January 10, 2001

Cold again.

Sunday, January 07, 2001

Cold & bright.

Thursday, January 04, 2001

Dark and raining heavily in the morning.

Tuesday, January 02, 2001

Dark, dismal weather.
