Horrible weather - fog and drizzle, and a penetrating cold. Am going to keep the heating on 24h pro tem, at >= 13°C, as the house is cooling down too much overnight and while I'm out.

Very cold day with low cloud, occasionally parting, and mist.

On the way out in the morning cunningly picked up milk in advance for the evening, guessing that the temperature would be <5°C all day, which indeed it was. Also got some hot hash browns from the takeaway counter, which really put fresh spirit into me for the long walk.

Bright, very cold morning with wonderfully complementary view to the one I described last night.

Mellow, hazy sun journey on M25 and M4, thinking of Gordon and Rosemary's outing to Burnham Beeches.

In Bracknell walked through the frost-bound park to the Morrisons.

Lovely bleak winter afternoon with low sun - coming into Hitchin, different distances in the haze were different depths of grey, like multiple cut-out sheets of cardboard. And after sunset, a rosy, wintry view uphill from the hotel with black trees in silhouette.

At this time of year I've noticed I don't like going home when it's too dark, as about 4.30 I'm traversing lonely bits of the grounds. Noticed today I was just borderline happy at 4.35, 2/3 of the way through civil twilight with a clear sky.

Took down Christmas decorations and thoroughly sorted out the crates they're kept in. Rather a pleasant task this, with the sun sparkling on the tinsel.

NEW YEAR'S DAY. Day had some brightness at first but soon turned dark and dull, and it's raining now (4.30pm). To the Tesco Express in the afternoon through the damp streets. There's something about New Year's Day that brings it down - the shadow of past hangovers perhaps, the end of the holidays approaching.
