Very foggy night.

Tuesday, December 26, 1995

Snow in the evening.

29th. The snow that fell on Boxing Day evening is still lying - very cold, about -5 C, ever since then, though it warmed up to -1 C this afternoon.

'There were four consecutive nights from the 26-27th recorded beneath -20C... Although it was nowhere near as cold in the south, it was still cold: the lowest temperature at Elmdon (near Birmingham), for example, was -9.0C on the 29th.' [...]

Thursday, December 21, 1995

Damp, misty evening.

I was so pleased to be invited to the party, that the grey winter skies, nondescript industrial purlieus and misty estuary valley almost seemed to light up.

Monday, December 18, 1995

Cold and damp.

Friday, December 15, 1995

Raining in the morning.

Thursday, December 07, 1995

Started snowing again at 8am. In the afternoon the snow had become thick and soft, and people on campus were having snowball fights and building snowmen.

Walked home along the footpath over the fields - nearly a white-out. It was like the Zero Room, I expected to come out purged.'

Wednesday, December 06, 1995

Home by four, glad to get out of the cold - fine snow falling all day but no increase in depth.

Tuesday, December 05, 1995

Snow shower about 9.10; walked past a bloke who said 'Winter's begun eh?' More snow in the morning, then sunshine.

Friday, November 17, 1995

Well cold today. It snowed for a bit in the evening - some of the earliest snow I can remember. I said we were in for a harsh winter last month when I saw the quantity of berries on the pyrocanthus and acorns on the oaks in Galen Lane.

'A warm spell at the start of the month, with temperatures of around 25C in the south on the 8th and 9th. On the 8th, under cloudless blue skies that were enjoyed across much of Britain, Torquay had 10.8 hours of sunshine.' [...]

Heavy rain and thunder all morning left everything looking much greener.

Thursday, August 24, 1995

Tuesday, June 13, 1995

The plan to study at Weffolk is becoming more and more real every day. I know well enough it's an expensive course with the purpose of work, but it doesn't mean there won't be landscapes and weather to chime with my memories from UoL. I can find counterparts to 1988's golden autumn mornings, its grey winter dampness, red February sunsets from 1990, beautiful summer afternoons, spring thunderstorms... was there ever a crisp frosty morning at UoL? I think I associate a few with Nov. 1988 on the horrible morning journey.
