Turned out hot and fine, but not so unpleasantly hot as last week. Walking home it felt very much like the end of August: hot but with lower-slanting sun, smaller trees yellowing.

Yet another hot day, even though it rained during the night. Pleasant atmosphere in the office - not literally, it was about 84°F.

Very hot walk home. After tea just now found the bedroom temperature was 89°F, despite the curtains having been closed all day. Think that's the highest bedroom temp I've ever recorded. Have got it down to 87 ten minutes later after getting the air flowing - fortuitously the sun has just moved round off the windows.

Off at 6.30 in a dank Bolton morning. Appalling delays on the M62 - didn't get to Hartshead Moor till 8am. Not going that way again, views or no views, driving into the clouds at the summit or not.

Got up much refreshed. Walked down to Tescos in the windy grey morning for supplies.

There was more rain today, mostly in the morning, but it wasn't as determined as yesterday.

Went round to S's for tea and supper. Left just after 9pm and hurried back - I'd forgotten that it's a week later than last time I was here last year, and that it would be darker on a cloudy evening.

Weather exactly like this day of my holiday last year, with the same bright grey sky and land, 'grotesquely awash as a courtyard where a fountain-basin has given way'.

Went to Sedbergh , got some good photos for FB of rainy hills and service areas..

Just now, about 6.10, some fine sun-breaks, real Aloysius stuff.

Failed to Turn Off To Stay On the A14 at Brampton. 'I've come to Peterborough by mistake'. It was quite hot by then, and would get hotter. Was at Blackrod by 7.30, Rivington Pike looking quite lovely in the evening light. ('Evening sunlight shows us Sandy Cove/Same as last year and the year before.')

Lovely weather - small Cu in the morning unusually disappearing and leaving the sky very clear, as clear as I can remember.

in the afternoon spent quite a long time sitting in a deckchair reading the Sibley bio of Lewis Carroll and appreciating the hot sunshine and clear blue sky. Took a photo for FB of myself in the deckchair, with the bit from The Tempest about the sun-burn'd sicklemen of August weary putting on their rye-straw hats to make holiday (I had my straw hat on).
