Tuesday, December 24, 1991

Everything quiet and grey with rolled stratocumuli.

Monday, December 23, 1991

Triffic weather today - massively windy in the morning, gusting Force 8 I reckoned (61mph according to the telly), then about 1pm it pissed down with rain, cleared up very quickly. By 9pm, the pressure had risen from 1004 to 1029 mb - 25 mb rise. A cold front passing over, as I guessed at the time and as the telly confirmed.

Saturday, December 21, 1991

Dark and grey and windy.

Friday, December 20, 1991

Weather like yesterday, but clearer during the day. In the evening, very thin high cloud with a near-full moon and strong West wind.

Thursday, December 19, 1991

A pleasant dark grey and windy day. In the evening the weather had cleared and a nearly-full Moon was shining brightly; it was still windy though.

Tuesday, December 17, 1991

Heavy shower of rain in the evening.

Friday, December 13, 1991

In the evening went for a walk in freezing fog.

December 14th. To town, in awful cold and well thick fog.

'..the severe freezing fogs of the second week.' [...]

Thursday, December 12, 1991

Very cold and frosty, but hazily clear.

Tuesday, December 10, 1991

Cold, clear, frosty morning.

Monday, December 09, 1991

Sunday, December 08, 1991

Beautiful cold frosty sunny morning.

Friday, December 06, 1991

Dull, responsible day - but at least the Sun came out.

Thursday, December 05, 1991

Hope this anticyclonal gloom (actual and figurative) dissipates soon.

'Very dry and anticyclonic.' [...]

December 15th. The pressure has dropped to 1024 mb and it looks like the anticyclone which has been here for 2 weeks is finally moving away.

Monday, December 02, 1991

Very depressing day. Dismal grey weather. Cold, raw, Decembral, grey.

(12.39am). Just listened to Bill Giles doing the Radio 4 weather. He sounded very distressed, as if he was about to cry.

Saturday, November 30, 1991

A cold, grey afternoon, but full of promise.

Friday, November 29, 1991

Fog in the evening. Been very warm recently. Tomorrow's the last day of autumn, so it should turn properly cold soon.

Wednesday, November 20, 1991

In the evening the near-full Moon very clear and bright, lighting up flat cumulus almost like daytime.

Tuesday, November 19, 1991

Woke up at 9.20, was confused by how dark it was. Walked to the optician's in driving rain and fierce winds. Got soaked. Walked home, against the wind this time, getting even more soaked. Incredibly dark.

Monday, November 18, 1991

Went for a walk in the evening, the waxing moon shining mistily through clouds.

Sunday, November 17, 1991

Went to Bury Hill for a walk on the Common: mist'd been hanging around all day, and as I drove there it turned into thick fog. Walked through the woods, came back via the road. In the lane it was foggy, dark, grey, quiet and utterly peaceful. Very relaxing, but freezing cold. Got back to the car, drove back in dangerously thick fog.

Tuesday, November 12, 1991

Wind was rising, to a crescendo at 7.30. It must've been the cold front passing over, because it absolutely pissed down.

'A deep depression on the 12th brought severe gales, heavy rain' [...]

Cold, wet, very windy.

Sunday, November 03, 1991

A massive black cloud drifted up from the West after sunset but it passed over. Later in the evening it was windy, very cold and very clear. Stars magnificent. Saw a white meteor blaze north-westwards across the zenith.

Saturday, November 02, 1991

Raining now, as well as windy: pressure dropping. Looks like we're in for a gale.

Friday, November 01, 1991

Very cold and windy, but pleasant for walking in the afternoon.

Fine clear cold autumn morning.

Very windy and cold, but bright and sunny. By midnight it was raining as well as blowing a gale. Pressure down too.

Wednesday, October 16, 1991

It rained in the morning, so didn't go to Sainsbury's: it got windier as the day went on. By midnight there was clear cold air and wind, the stars incredibly bright and clear, Orion coming up at a slant in the ESE.

Tuesday, October 15, 1991

Barometer's still going up.

Sunday, October 13, 1991

Went for a walk down the river. Beautiful autumn weather. The Pond (where we 'sailed' the tin bath) had totally dried up. Couldn't see anything on the bottom. It was never more than 5' or 6' deep.

Sunday, October 06, 1991

Went out for a walk about 5pm. Beautiful clear autumn weather with a low sun.

Saturday, October 05, 1991

Went to recycle cans, but there were too many wasps. I'll get rid of them when the weather turns colder and the wasps are all dead.

Thursday, October 03, 1991

After Neighbours rode to Sainsbury's - very windy, bleak and grey but nicely so. As I rode back it began pissing down with cold rain and I got completely soaked. But at 9.30pm it was cold and clear and great. (The rain earlier was probably a cold front passing.)

Monday, September 30, 1991

Beautiful weather all day - bright and cloudless in the morning and afternoon, with a cloudy but interesting spell at lunchtime. though)

Sunday, September 29, 1991

Pissed down in the afternoon.

Friday, September 27, 1991

To Sainsburys under a damp dark grey sky at 9 am.

Thursday, September 26, 1991

On the lunchtime news thunder was predicted, then 40 mins. later it arrived. Absolutely pissing down with massively loud thunder and violent violet flashes of lightning.

Tuesday, September 24, 1991

Grey skies and drizzle of varying strengths all day.

Monday, September 23, 1991

It rained, so I didn't go into town.

Saturday, September 21, 1991

Got in from the party at 2 am: pressure'd dropped from about 1020 mb to 1001 mb, and it was pretty windy.

Thursday, September 19, 1991

Beautiful morning.

Wednesday, September 18, 1991

Came back as it was starting to rain.

Went into town to sign on. Had to wait outside in the rain. Went to the library. Walked back in the rain.

Saturday, September 14, 1991

A roll of thunder at one point during the evening, and some rain, but (like Wednesday) not enough to make anything wet.

Thursday, September 12, 1991

Getting colder.

Wednesday, September 11, 1991

Much colder today. When we came out of the library in the morning it'd gone very dark, and it even drizzled a bit later. Not used to overcast any more. Got even colder and darker in the evening - October, November, December-like.

Tuesday, September 10, 1991

I reckon things'll calm down when it rains - been dry as a bone here for weeks.

'Many places had quite a dry month' [...]

Saturday, September 07, 1991

Beautiful cool clear September morning, lovely afternoon.

Tuesday, September 03, 1991

Hot and hazy all day, strong smell of damp at night.

Monday, September 02, 1991

Very autumnal - misty and humid - but also as hot as yesterday. Loads of thick cold fog down by the river. Getting cold at nights now.

Sunday, September 01, 1991

Very hot all day.

There was a notable heatwave at the start of the month. 29.8C was reached...on the 1st [...]

No more special radio weather forecasts: they're all coming from the telly weather studio now. A pity in a way - one of the first things I noticed about Radio 4 was the different weather forecasters, and I got quite used to them.

Saturday, August 31, 1991

Last day of Summer today: beautiful weather.

Wednesday, August 28, 1991

Cold late in the evening - autumn approaches.

Friday, August 23, 1991

Rainy and windy: cold but exhilarating. Dark clouds, and rain beating on the train windows (the rain was following me Eastwards); after I got to Norwich, as I came up to the top of Rose Lane, the sun burst out of the trailing edge of the clouds and everything was transformed.

Sunday, August 18, 1991

About 9 pm went out for a walk: it was cool and almost cold, and for the first time this year there was that smoky autumnal smell in the air. Nice to see the seasons are still turning.

Saturday, August 17, 1991

Very subtle hints of autumn in the air these past few days, and this evening reminded me a bit of those evening walks just before I went away to uni three years ago.

Thursday, August 15, 1991

Cloudless and boiling hot all day. Pretty tiring, all this heat.

Wednesday, August 07, 1991

Hot and sunny since about noon, so should be fine weather till August 24th (!).

Later a clear, starry night, unusual for summer.

Sunday, July 14, 1991

Overcast in the morning, by the afternoon this had cleared and it was hot.

Saturday, July 13, 1991

A strange day - dark grey clouds, wind but warm air. I don't trust it.

Thursday, July 11, 1991

Walked into town to bank the cheque in extreme heat. Spent the afternoon sheltering from the sun.

Wednesday, July 10, 1991

Very hot again.

Sunday, July 07, 1991

Fucking hot in the morning, cooled down and got cloudier in the afternoon.

Saturday, July 06, 1991

Hot and very hazy in the morning: intense heat later. Well hot.

Friday, July 05, 1991

Came back at 3am, getting lighter all the time, and a left-hand crescent waning moon in the East with the coming loom of dawn.

Thursday, July 04, 1991

Saw a shooting star (blue-green incandescent trail) on the way back; wished.

Wednesday, July 03, 1991

Went up to the off-licence in a still, hazy, humid July evening.

Monday, July 01, 1991

Walked into town in the rain.

Sunday dawned damp and grey, and I was woken up at 8.30. Weather improved in the afternoon.

Friday, June 28, 1991

Friday of the last week of the last term of the last year. Woke up at 9am and went around taking souvenir photos of the campus in the clear summer morning sunlight. In the afternoon there was lashing rain, and thunder, but an hour later it was sunny again.

Thursday, June 27, 1991

Out in the evening under a beautiful full Moon.

In the evening it was raining and very cold and very windy.

Thursday, June 13, 1991

Very windy with frequent heavy showers.

Woke up at 6.30 am to a beautiful summer morning.

Wednesday, June 05, 1991

Spotted with rain in the morning.

Monday, June 03, 1991

Cold today, but big clouds and showers in the morning, and lovely clear skies in the evening. Nice to see the Sun after so long. Venus, Jupiter and Mars are all in line ready for the conjunction on the 17th. Venus is quite amazingly bright at the moment.

Thursday, May 23, 1991

About tennish it was still vaguely light, and Jupiter and especially Venus were burning brilliantly in the western sky.

Sunday, May 19, 1991

Lovely summer-night smell.

Friday, May 17, 1991

Lovely Spring weather: sun, fluffy clouds etc but a bit cold.

In the evening put an embargo on revision and walked down the valley. That lovely May evening light is in full flow. In the park to the north I looked out west over the ranked receding countryside. The light was coming in under the branches and clothing the slope down to the river in golden haze. Looking back, the horse-chestnuts were in bloom and utterly beautiful in the light against the deep blue sky. It's worth having lived through all that trouble to see that kind of thing.

Later saw the New Moon, Venus and the Sun in the sky all together.

I saw an interesting thing as the sun set: it was split up into sparks by tree branches and the last one (the highest) suddenly turned deep red, then green and finally vivid dark blue. Beautiful and very impressive. I've never seen it before.

Monday, May 13, 1991

Start of the finals. Put on my special-occasion paisley shirt for luck and went for a walk round the Broad first. Hot, sunny, humid.

Thursday, May 09, 1991

Beautiful Spring weather all day - hot, sunny, big white clouds, blue sky, more or less flat calm. Lovely.

Wednesday, May 08, 1991

Beautiful evening.

Tuesday, April 23, 1991

Sat by the open window with a beautiful Spring morning outside - like the beginning of The Hobbit.

Monday, April 22, 1991

Beautiful weather, though cold: woke up to sunlight, and the rest of the day was huge clouds and cold showers with sunny spells. Very windy too.

Saturday, April 20, 1991

Came back in driving snow (in April!).

Wednesday, April 17, 1991

Freezing grey windy day.

Sunday, April 14, 1991

Saturday, April 13, 1991

Lovely day again, especially the afternoon. In the evening the weather suddenly turned cold and grey and windy.

Friday, April 12, 1991

Lovely weather again. In the evening everything was absolutely beautiful. Warm, still, the remnants of the light of sunset still in the sky and the smell of coming rain in the air.

Thursday, April 11, 1991

Beautiful weather all day - like summer. Isn't April a nice month?

Saturday, April 06, 1991

Freezing cold rain in the evening.

Friday, April 05, 1991

About 9.20 went out for a can - beautiful clear night.

Thursday, April 04, 1991

In the afternoon the weather cleared to a beautiful spring evening - leaves are out on most of the trees now.

Wednesday, April 03, 1991

Lovely Spring day today - cauliflower clouds.

Monday, April 01, 1991

About 7.30pm dusk was just falling, along with a few drops of rain, and the quiet grey clouds and the wind and a fresh smell took me right back, to before all this hassle.

Friday, March 22, 1991

Another beautiful day, weather-wise. Great cauliflower clouds and so on.

Thursday, March 21, 1991

With the Sun hot and bright, Spring was obviously in full flow.

Wednesday, March 20, 1991

The equinoctial gales are properly in progress. Extremely windy now - as I made my way back here against the wind a few minutes ago, I saw Jupiter and Castor and Pollux briefly visible among the flying clouds. A great sign of optimism.

Monday, March 18, 1991

Went to the off-licence in the evening in rain and wind.

Sunday, March 03, 1991

Beautiful weather today, positively Spring-like. I always notice the return of blue skies with cauliflower clouds about this time of year.

Monday, February 25, 1991

Coming back from handing in my essay at 1.20pm the lovely weather really got to me. How lovely, I thought - the kind of Sep. 28 1988 weather I've always loved. 4 days till March 1st and Spring!

Sunday, February 24, 1991

In the morning, Chubday-like sun and blue sky and soft wind.

Saturday, February 23, 1991

F'windy from the S.W. all day. Amazingly windy in fact - nearly pushed me over at 4.15pm.

Thursday, February 21, 1991

Freezing south-westerly wind sprang up on my way back from the hospital about 2pm, and by midnight had grown to enormous strength.

Saturday, February 16, 1991

About 5.30 I was coming back from the Co-op when I saw Venus and a very thin new Moon about 5-° apart in the western sky. Venus was very bright and against the pale blue background it was a beautiful sight.

Sunday, February 10, 1991

Got depressed again: I cheered up later though, especially after walking home through thickly-falling snow. Strange things, mood swings.

Tuesday, February 05, 1991

It started snowing at about 9pm. At 11pm frolicked in renewed snow, then sat watching the thick snow falling till about 2am.

February 6th. Woke up at noon, went out to the Co-op in snow and freezing East wind.

February 7th. About 10 am it started to snow heavily and by 3pm there was at last plenty of snow on the ground. As I read on through the afternoon the white patches joined up (partly due to drifting in the strong East wind) and it carried on till about 5pm. The average cover was a couple of inches at least. Snow again at 8pm till about 10pm.

February 8th. Went to the Co-op. No bread due to the snow. It snowed almost all day - quite deep now. A12 blocked by abandoned vehicles.

February 9th. More snow, would you believe it. Woke up about 11 am, trudged through the snow to the Co-op.

February 10th. On the way back at 10pm had a snowball fight and then we sledged down the hill on a bread crate. It was brilliant. Walked home through thickly-falling snow.

'A notable ten day cold spell... snow across most of Britain and some very low temperatures, making this the most severe spell of weather since 1987. The cold air arrived from Siberia on the 4th, with temperatures falling on the 5th and 6th, with the 7-9th as the coldest days. There was much powdery snow over England in this period' [...]

February 15th. Had a good walk, albeit in the slush, to Sainsburys via the pub.

'Milder air and a thaw arrived in all parts on the 15th'

Sunday, January 13, 1991

Frosty at first - spotted a couple of cars run into ditches. Beautifully clear sunny day.

Saturday, January 12, 1991

Beautiful clear afternoon - went back to the highest point, stupendous view, best day I could've chosen, especially after Tuesday's debâcle. Clouded over very swiftly about 5pm though.

Friday, January 11, 1991

Heavy rain, but by the evening perfect star-gazing conditions.

Wednesday, January 09, 1991

Driving rain and thunder in the morning, during which the sun came out. Showers the rest of the day. In the evening very windy, cold too.

Tuesday, January 08, 1991

Drove to the highest point in the county, 440ft. It was raining so hard I didn't even get out of the car, but I could see there were wide views.

Saturday, January 05, 1991

Great winds in the evening.

Friday, January 04, 1991

Perfectly clear night with all the stars visible. Noticed Betelgeuse (top left-hand corner of Orion) is red, in the same way as Aldebaran though not quite so red.

Wednesday, January 02, 1991

Rain.

Tuesday, January 01, 1991

Dark grey rolls of cloud.
