Thursday, December 27, 1990

Clear and bright.

Wednesday, December 26, 1990

In the afternoon I realised I hadn't been out of the house for 2 days and went for a walk in very strong wind. Went down to the park and watched the sun emerge from the flying clouds in the West.

Monday, December 24, 1990

Got the paper - everything quiet and grey with rolled stratocumuli. Sat about taking in the Christmas Eve atmosphere.

Thursday, November 22, 1990

Was watching a particularly vivid morning rainbow when it was on the news that Thatcher is going to resign. She could be gone by Tuesday. Late in the afternoon a thick fog descended and so did the cold.

Friday, November 02, 1990

Came back about 2am under full moon behind wildly flying clouds.

Monday, October 29, 1990

At 7am going down the hill in the first fresh fullness of sunrise - all the country to the West was gently illuminated, which makes a change; the sun's usually behind it, eh?

Wednesday, October 24, 1990

Watched a fantastic sunset from the hill. It was absolutely beautiful. Tamara talked bollocks about drugs but I thought, No, this is the real thing.

In the evening walked round to Wood St. in the rain.

Sunday, September 23, 1990

Tuesday, September 18, 1990

Went out for a brief walk about 8 pm - dark, cloudy sunset, strengthening wind. Autumn's asserting itself.

'Another hot spell at the end of the month, with 31C in the east on the 29th, before the month ended on a cool note.' [...]

Sunday, August 19, 1990

Up at 10.30; went for the papers in the rain. It carried on raining all day, very heavily about 5.15pm.

Friday, August 03, 1990

Stewart and Christian came round but it was just too hot (temperature records broken in Hampshire (99 F) and rumours of 100 F in Essex somewhere).

'A nation held its breath for the 3rd as the breeze died down to still air. 35C was widespread, with 37.1C (98.8F) at Cheltenham on the 3rd, the highest temperature ever recorded under standard conditions in Britain (before 2003).' [...]

Drank wine in the sun.

March 14th. To Sainsburys in warm dusty sunlight with a coolish breeze.

Thursday, March 01, 1990

It has snowed! It is snowing!

Monday, February 26, 1990

11.45pm. Rain beating on the windows. Bedtime.

Friday, February 23, 1990

Utterly beautiful weather. The Chubday tomorrow too - great coincidence. After lunch sat outside reading Sherlock Holmes; zapped down to Sainsburys again for wine owing to the weather, drank it in the garden.

Thursday, February 22, 1990

Beautiful mild weather all day, like the Chubday of old.

Friday, February 16, 1990

Saw a really good/bright shooting star (the best yet) while waiting for the bus.

Undecided sort of weather all day.

Saturday, February 03, 1990

Beautiful day - sun, wind, blue sky, little white clouds.

Tuesday, January 30, 1990

At 6.45 the wind was rising and there was a spit of rain. On my way home just before midnight the wind re-began with a vengeance. Blowing violently now at 1 am, rain beating on the panes.

Sunday, January 28, 1990

Quite a good day - beautiful weather.

Saturday, January 27, 1990

In the morning was incredibly happy thinking about last night etc. This soon wore off when it began raining at lunchtime.

Thursday, January 25, 1990

Strong wind, 3 vodkas. During the afternoon the wind got worse and worse until it was blowing a gale - A12 blocked etc etc. It seems to have abated somewhat by now (12.59am) but it was f'amazing earlier. Lots of stuff on the news - death toll nearly 40 now. 5 at lunchtime, 20 at teatime, 23 by 7pm - even the 1987 storm only killed 20.

'The Burns' Day Storm on the 25th that affected the midlands and south. It lasted 8 hours, with winds peaking in the SW at dawn, and in the east at midday. It killed 47. (The death toll was higher in this storm than the Great Storm of October 1987 because this one occurred in the daytime.) It obviously caused major traffic and shipping disruption. There were inland gusts of 80 mph, although there were some gusts on the south coast around 100 mph. A wider area was affected than with the 1987 Great Storm.[...]

Watched the sunset - very impressive delicate tones of rose, purple, dark blue and that heart-breaking yellow-orange-red you get at sunset, with a gibbous moon high in the sky to the east.

Friday, January 05, 1990

Grey, rainy, rather dismal weather. Went out about noon to Canvey Island - it was well depressing, apart from the oil refineries burning off gas, which looked rather fine against the grey sky and marshy, dull landscape.

Monday, January 01, 1990

At least the weather changed, even if it did only start raining.
