At 6.45 the wind was rising and there was a spit of rain. On my way home just before midnight the wind re-began with a vengeance. Blowing violently now at 1 am, rain beating on the panes.

Quite a good day - beautiful weather.

Saturday, January 27, 1990

In the morning was incredibly happy thinking about last night etc. This soon wore off when it began raining at lunchtime.

Thursday, January 25, 1990

Strong wind, 3 vodkas. During the afternoon the wind got worse and worse until it was blowing a gale - A12 blocked etc etc. It seems to have abated somewhat by now (12.59am) but it was f'amazing earlier. Lots of stuff on the news - death toll nearly 40 now. 5 at lunchtime, 20 at teatime, 23 by 7pm - even the 1987 storm only killed 20.

'The Burns' Day Storm on the 25th that affected the midlands and south. It lasted 8 hours, with winds peaking in the SW at dawn, and in the east at midday. It killed 47. (The death toll was higher in this storm than the Great Storm of October 1987 because this one occurred in the daytime.) It obviously caused major traffic and shipping disruption. There were inland gusts of 80 mph, although there were some gusts on the south coast around 100 mph. A wider area was affected than with the 1987 Great Storm.[...]

Beautiful sunny, windy but cold day.

Wind/clouds/moon/dark/consequences.

Friday, January 12, 1990

Walked home through the rain feeling excellent.

Wednesday, January 10, 1990

Good weather today. Wind again at last, and a full moon.

Sunday, January 07, 1990

Watched the sunset - very impressive delicate tones of rose, purple, dark blue and that heart-breaking yellow-orange-red you get at sunset, with a gibbous moon high in the sky to the east.

Friday, January 05, 1990

Grey, rainy, rather dismal weather. Went out about noon to Canvey Island - it was well depressing, apart from the oil refineries burning off gas, which looked rather fine against the grey sky and marshy, dull landscape.

Monday, January 01, 1990

At least the weather changed, even if it did only start raining.
