Scallop clouds, with seams thin enough for a good view of the eclipse. About a third of the Sun gone at 10.20, becoming
impressive by 10.50. Everyone outside eleven. It got darker as if night were falling - the bits of blue
sky were dark like as night comes on. Sun like a fiery crescent Moon - sort of about 40% width. Memorable. Just managed to see leaf-shadow 'blobs' later for about a second.

August 1999
1st. Weather suited the date - hottest so far.
2nd. Hotter still. Fortunately had to work in the air-conditioned
machine room.
'35C reported at Mildenhall (Suffolk) on the 2nd, with 32.7C across East Anglia on the 1st and 2nd.' [...]
5th. Terrific thunderstorm overnight.
8th. Rained all morning and into the afternoon, when it thundered.
9th. Impressive thunderstorm in the afternoon. The heavy rain washed lots of biggish stones into the road outside.
'several spells of thunder, with some severe storms and heavily local rain and flooding.'
14th. Short sharp thunderstorm about 6.45 pm, very intense. Hail and strong winds. Hope it rains again
as it damps down drunken behaviour.
16th. Lift home in a thunderstorm.
17th. Weather very cold and even more like autumn. Raining at 5pm. At the end of the evening, home in terrific thunderstorm with driving rain.
18th. More thunderstorms.
'The most thundery August since 1960.'
