Strolled to Tescos and back in a bright, sunny winter day, warm in the sun and cold out of it.
Externally it's been a terrible year, the worst since say 1993 or 1985. Authoritarianism, racism, militarism and open class warfare all on the rise. And god knows what Putin has in mind. And ever more worrying climate signs with this record mild December - not only are my spring bulbs coming up, but spontaneous potato plants too, something like 4 months early. Only 3 months since harvest, ffs!

Miserable, dark day till about 1pm, when it brightened up and there was a very brief sun-break.

Began typing up the 1985-88 weather diaries, the desk diaries which had a similar function to the weather marginalia I started putting in this diary about ten years ago, except that I kept the temperature record in there too. They aren't very dense so a couple of months a day is no trouble.

BOXING DAY. Every year I seem to spend the Christmas/New Year period hearing about floods - each year they seem to get worse, and this year's seem to be unprecedented - hints of that last year too with the Dawlish thing. All getting a bit John Wyndham.

Very mild weather continuing, and it got drier today at last.

Worryingly mild December weather - though even in the blog December 1988 shows up as very mild, and I know that 1974 and 1934 were also unseasonably warm.

Still don't like hearing birds singing away in December though, it feels like something's not right.
