Till early afternoon a real dry winter day with some sun, reminded me of the 1979 Spring Flowers stamps for some reason - not the weather depicted on them, but the weather I might've looked at them in.

But it started raining at 3pm and was heavy by 4pm. By 7pm it was clear and the stars out.

Some bright sun, but a lot of the time it was stratus with breaks. Some real 1990-like yellow-and-grey February skies these last few days. Very evocative.

Frost first thing, some sun later, rain at times. Although the weather was warmer than it has been, felt the cold acutely all day.

Very cold last night, -5°C, with a coating of further snow, but in the morning it was warmer and there was a general thaw during the day at last. I expect the snow was caused by the first bit of the warmer air getting pushed up over the retreating polar continental air.

-6°C last night, -3 at 9am, intolerably cold all day too; it got quite dispiriting in the afternoon. It was clear all day till 7pm when it clouded over quickly.

Very cold again - intolerably cold, though there was some sun. I've left the heating on while I'm out the last two days. Most of the paths are now fairly snow-free, though it's still lying on lawns and fields almost as thick as it was 5 days ago.

Clear and sunny at first, cloudier later. It had been warm in the sun, but as soon as it got low, it turned very cold - -3%deg; C at 4pm! Pressure very high too, 1042 mb.

Most of the usual cats have been absent from the garden during the cold weather, but one hard-working cat was out and about at 6 am, the one with the massive furry tail, picking its way delicately along the snowbound garden path.

Woke up to 5 inches of snow on the ground - best fall since Dec 2010. There was some in Jan 2010 too now I come to think of it. Snow has become quite common now, whereas as a kid we only had 1978, 1981 and, when I was rather older, 1985 and 1987.

Went out at 9.50 to find it had been snowing for some time. Very cold, so dry, fine flakes piling up.

February 5th. About 5 inches of snow overnight. Best fall since 2010 and 1991.

February 11th. -6 C last night.

February 12th. -5 C last night with a further coating of snow. Slight thaw in the morning.

Perhaps a dusting of snow overnight, but it could just've been frost. A couple of days ago I dropped a big chunk of ice on the patio - all the bits were still there today, as sharp-edged as they were when I broke it.

Flakes of snow at 9am, some sun during the day through cirrostratus, the moon likewise in the evening.

Went out at 10pm to smoke to find it had been snowing for some time. That hissing, dry sound of it falling.
