Quiet, cold, grey afternoon.

Tedious grey weather again. I think the weather has run out of imagination and is giving itself the rest of the year off. I wish the sun'd come out.

In the morning went for a drive around with Mike. The rain gradually stopped and a beautiful mellow light spread over the scene. It was beautiful, even outside that motor spares shop in Gt Puddleton.

In the afternoon went to Sainsburys' for some Sam Smiths' under slatey skies - very impressive.

A massive thunder and hail storm about 1.45pm.

Rode to campus under grey skies and in the rain.

A strange, sad sort of old day. Woke up at 9 am, went to the garage for milk; immediately it started pissing down with rain and being really windy. So I stayed till about 2pm when it cleared up. Late in the evening it got windy and very cold.

Walked to campus and back. Really pleasant; cold late Autumn afternoon, thin sun.

The rain we walked home in last night had turned fairly steady by 8 am but it stopped about midday. About 3.30 the sun actually came out and in the end there was a beautiful golden evening.

May 21st. Lay outside till midday, then the three of us went to the bar for a cooling drink (it was f'hot).

May 31st. May hasn't been so bad - lovely weather at least.

Walked to Liverpool St because of the Tube strike, got freezingly soaked. When I got home we went for a spin in Chris's car - we went through the ford, which was over-deep due to the rain.

Freezing cold out: Norwich was the coldest place in the country today - 36°F (2°C);

Went to breakfast; came back, read the Observer with the window open and the Sun shining down for all it was worth.
