Beautiful day - definite hint of autumn early in the morning with the slanting orange sunlight and tint of the clear sky, and a ceiling of fog at about 100ft. which the bus climbed into going up the hill.

It's got very hot the last few days - as hot as it was a month ago. Quite disconcerting, as with the arrival of September I'd put my autumn head on. I'd forgotten that September can be hot and sunny just as March can be cold and snowy.

In the afternoon for end-of-summer walk, just like last year. Picked a couple of blackberries, sweet and ripe. Weather just right - sun and big white cumuli. Stood in the high field in the dry grass looking at the huge sky, ranges of cloud 10 and 20 miles away. Thought as always of the line in
Watership Down - 'Frith! You can see the whole world!'

Beautiful day, cold to start with though. Yesterday hinted at one kind of autumn weather, rain all day and a sun-break at sunset; today hinted at the hard, bright, cold other kind. Both just hints though, as was the tiny suggestion of slant in the sunlight on my lunchtime walk. Again, it still seemed like summer - very late summer.
Picked and ate a blackberry on the way to work. Still a bit sharp.

Dark, gloomy, 'murky' (as Jack Vance would say) morning. Middle afternoon had come to the planet Sabria, I was thinking on the bus in the rain.
Everything now bright green again, quite a change from the drought.

Again, warmer. Walking home up the approach road I did for a second wonder if there was a mellow, 'bright autumn afternoon' slant to the light, but the shrubs and trees were still so bright green, and the sky so bright deep blue,
that I decided it was natural late-afternoon slant.

Again, warm in the sun. Have been looking closely, whenever the sun's been out in the last week, for the slightly slanting pre-autumnal sunlight that I used to notice around Aug. 20th and last year detected ten days earlier. Haven't seen it yet - looked round thoroughly today and it is definitely still Summer.

Much cooler start, though we were back up to 85° in the office in the afternoon. 87° is too much, 85° is nasty but sustainable, 83° is hot, 71° is nice for sitting and working, 68° is too cold for that, 65° is too cold to sleep in. Then it's outdoors, and in Celsius - 7° is the upper limit for gloves, hats etc, 0° is cold enough to make you hurry, -4° has the cold
striking up through your shoe soles.

Unpleasantly hot, but NE breeze stopped it from being worse. A lot of dried-up plants and trees with yellow leaves about, I've noticed. Also, the tidal bit of the river is, at low tide, just a stream in a sea of mud. You could jump across the
actual flowing bit. Back to work. Apparently it was nastily hot
last week, 95° in some offices. Carried on with Burmese Days, ideally suited as reading for this weather.

Not quite so hot. Lots of heavy rain.
Woke up at 3.15am (1½ hours before sunrise) to see a lot of light in the North-east. I'm sure I haven't seen it so light, so early, before, but it can't've changed. The sky was quite clear, but not unusually clear. Odd.

On train home, through the deep green countryside, and on the way up the hill from the station in the calm grey evening, and back in the living room with the window open and the chestnut tree outside,
I felt a deep calm and peace, the sense of the vast, benign indifference of the universe. As if I'd opened the Box of
Jhana and been healed as Hindle was. Because I have been a bit Hindle-like recently.

Yet more biting Easterly wind. Looked more closely at house buying process, getting list of 25 stages from a website and,
as a result, asking a solicitor for a quote for fees. Just wish it was so easy to find a house to buy in the first place. Odd positive feeling on way home - don't know if it was the sun at its highest 5pm elevation this year, or the house stuff,
but I had an extraordinary 'things are moving again' feeling which in some ways I haven't had since circa 1988.

Some real sunshine today: blue sky and white cumulus, then dark clouds and a heavy shower, then back again. It's still obviously late winter, but it resembles spring. Odd feeling of happiness on the bus home, with a powerful westering sun shining up through yellow-grey horizon clouds. Warmer weather revives my feelings of 'spaciousness' - I'm not sealed in a tiny bubble of in-clothes warmth when I'm
outside.
