Today was hot and stifling. All afternoon I could feel the heat building up; it thundered slightly every hour. As 4pm approached I saw dark clouds building in the West; they were virtually boiling up.
About five past, there was a few glimmers of reflected lightning, a roll of thunder and light rain began to fall. At ten past I heard a tremendous slashing on the window, got up and looked out.
To call it a deluge was understatement. Huge raindrops, mixed with large hailstones were thundering down in a solid wall. Water was deluging from the gutters. It was the heaviest rainfall I've ever seen.
'There were some notable hailstorms in Suffolk and Essex on the 26th. The "Dunmow hailstorm" was particularly damaging; the sky was reported as turning green, hailstones up to 65 mm fell, and nearly 32 mm of rain fell in half an hour midafternoon.' [...]

5pm and it has been snowing almost consistently since 11 o'clock.
14th. It has snowed almost all day. Snow was 2½" deep in some places. We were sent home at 3.05pm today
because of 2" of snow.

The rest of the morning passed without incident except for a snow flurry at ten-thirty.
January 5th. There was an inch of real snow on the ground this morning. The temperature never climbed above freezing all day. It was -3 at 5pm.
January 6th. This morning's paper-round was done in 2 or 3 inches of snow. During the afternoon it snowed, occasionally, but a shower started at about 5pm and it is still snowing now. There was a thaw (up to 2 C) at about 1pm but it refroze and the rotten snow is being replaced by a fresh, new, forecast layer.
January 7th. The temperature did not rise above -3 C today. -5½ C was achieved last night. There is frozen snow everywhere.
'Very cold (0.8C CET) with frequent snow in the first three weeks.' [...]
