Out at five to the nativity service. Windy and pissing down with rain. Rev Jane was there, doing
the narration. Afterwards she offered me a lift to the manse. As it was only 6.05 I protested that this would be an
imposition on them since I wouldn't have to leave till 7.45. So came back home for tea (salad and Stilton). Off again at seven to the manse, got absolutely soaked. Jane said she wished she'd insisted on bringing me round earlier when she saw the weather, I said yes, I'd regretted my politeness.

3rd. Beautiful weather, very clear.
6th. Misty night followed by hot hazy day.
8th. Still fairly hot.
11th. Very hot.
'There was a notable heatwave at the start of the month.' [...]
20th. Rain in the night and in the morning, thunder in the afternoon. Humid and unpleasant.
21st. Rain am and pm, clearing to a fine golden evening.
24th. Continuous rain in the morning. Lovely golden evening.
30th. Didn't finish till 6.15 pm, by when it was pissing down with rain.
'particularly wet in the second half'

Scallop clouds, with seams thin enough for a good view of the eclipse. About a third of the Sun gone at 10.20, becoming
impressive by 10.50. Everyone outside eleven. It got darker as if night were falling - the bits of blue
sky were dark like as night comes on. Sun like a fiery crescent Moon - sort of about 40% width. Memorable. Just managed to see leaf-shadow 'blobs' later for about a second.

1st. Weather suited the date - hottest so far.
2nd. Hotter still. Fortunately had to work in the air-conditioned
machine room.
'35C reported at Mildenhall (Suffolk) on the 2nd, with 32.7C across East Anglia on the 1st and 2nd.' [...]
5th. Terrific thunderstorm overnight.
8th. Rained all morning and into the afternoon, when it thundered.
9th. Impressive thunderstorm in the afternoon. The heavy rain washed lots of biggish stones into the road outside.
'several spells of thunder, with some severe storms and heavily local rain and flooding.'
14th. Short sharp thunderstorm about 6.45 pm, very intense. Hail and strong winds. Hope it rains again
as it damps down drunken behaviour.
16th. Lift home in a thunderstorm.
17th. Weather very cold and even more like autumn. Raining at 5pm. At the end of the evening, home in terrific thunderstorm with driving rain.
18th. More thunderstorms.
'The most thundery August since 1960.'

Very interesting conversation with Craig re thunderstorms. I recalled that fantastic one in 1994
that I was forewarned of by it disrupting Wimbledon before it arrived, and that went right over the house; he recalled
a similarly impressive occasion in 1996 when he was taking landscape photos and one turned up with fork lightning and all.
I said I loved the proper fork lightning. 'None of your sheet rubbish' he confirmed.

2nd. Absolutely pouring with rain when I went out in the morning - like June 1997. Sun came out at lunchtime rendering everything hot and steamy.
29th. Rained all day.
'most of the rain fell just on the 2nd and 29th' [...]
7th. Lots of rain - heavy showers and some prolonged periods. A great thunderstorm at lunchtime: I was on the top
floor and watched it approach, the landscape disappearing behind curtains of rain. Some great streaks of
lightning.
12th. Rained all day, very heavily in the morning, thunder and lightning in the afternoon. June seems to be rainy
as a rule (like June 1997 where it poured almost every day).

1st. Lovely morning.
2nd. Cloudy to start with but cleared to a lovely day.
3rd. Bank Holiday and beautiful weather, so in true H.G. Wells early novel style I took to my bike.
4th. Cooler today and windy.
6th. Cool, grey and windy.
7th. Quiet grey day with a strangely cosy rainy afternoon.
'A very warm month, but dull in places ... Three very warm spells (1-3rd, 19-20th, 27th to the end).' [...]
13th. Some good heavy showers in the afternoon, with a bit of thunder.
14th. More heavy showers.
'Frequent thunderstorms'
27th. Lovely weather again, definitely a hot day.
29th. Hot weather. Clouded over in the afternoon, and a beautiful yellow-grey light was followed by rain.

1st. Lovely weather again, hazy, windy as well though.
2nd. Apart from brief shower as I walked to Staples, another warm, hazy day.
'warm spells at the start and end (nearly 21C at Northolt, London, on the 1st, the highest reading so early in the year for some time)' [...]
13th. Beautiful, flawless morning; then turned cloudy and very cold with hail and heavy showers. Exciting.
14th. Extremely cold in the morning, heavy frost, very unseasonable. Bright and clear though, quite beautiful. 15th. Weather still very cold again. 16th. Cold and bright again, warmed up later. 19th. Beautiful day, still cold though. 20th. Cold, grey, windy, raining - miserable. 'a cold snap in the middle' 22nd. Warmer today, heavy shower at lunchtime. 23rd. Still quite warm but windy. 25th. Lovely weather all day. 26th. Interesting weather, warm and, strangely, hazy and windy at the same time. 27th. Warm and very springlike but still windy. 28th. Lovely weather - cloudless, warm, still a bit breezy. Left my coat at home for the first time this year (about 2 weeks earlier than usual I think). 29th. Grey and cold in the morning, brightened up suddenly to become a beautiful day with a strong N breeze. Absolutely beautiful bright morning, very cold though, with strong North wind. Snow shower in the afternoon.
8th. Very cold in the morning. Snowed a bit in the afternoon and was snowing lightly but continuously at 5pm. Still snowing at 9pm.
9th. Very cold.
10th. Very cold again.
11th. Not quite so cold. Glorious sunny morning, reminding me as always of that bit in Ivan Denisovich about the smoke of Tszesar's pipe in the sunlight like incense in church.
13th. Flawless weather, if cold.
'Severe spell... 8-14th in the south.' [...]
