Friday, December 30, 2005

Woke up to find it snowing heavily. Had a very pleasant morning with the Osskil bit of A Wizard of Earthsea, watching the snow fall.Fr a change it was perfectly quiet here. I could hear the snow sifting onto the windowsill.

Turned to rain quite suddenly about eleven. I'd meant to go into town first thing: as soon as I saw the buses were running I had an early lunch and went out into a chaos of slush, with heavy rain on a cold southerly wind.

Tried valiantly to spot Venus, this time at lunchtime without binoculars, but despite clear sky and unobstructed southern horizon, couldn't do it. Think I was looking too low.

Gradual Ci and flat As bits towards evening, then 0.

Sunday, December 18, 2005

Bright and sunny till about four, but very cold. Finally managed to see Venus in daylight (and through double glazing) 17º altitude at 2.40pm, 37º left of the Sun, mag -3.9 against limiting magnitude -3.2, so quite a feat. It took binoculars to locate it, but it was easily visible with the naked eye thereafter.

Beautiful sunset with red-lit cirrocumulus. Have noticed the Moon being very high recently, and checking the ephemeris found it at 27°N declination (4°N lat.), actually 4 degrees higher than the Sun at the solstice. In fact it's predicted at 70° altitude tonight, whereas I wouldn't expect the Sun to beat (90-52=) 38°+23°=61°.

Huge explosion at oil depot in Hertfordshire this morning, visible by satellites, and (due to temperature inversion) audible far off. I did hear something betwen 6am and 6.30 - assumed it was the neighbours.

Said temperature inversion presumably responsible for low mist under clearish sky with bright sun. in the afternoon a 'sparkling mist', which cleared in time for an almost-daylight Venus Observed at 3.36pm.

Worked from home all day. A nice change, but tiring. For lunchtime exercise strolled over to the Co-op. On the way back there was a change in the weather, with dark rainy Sc clearing a little from the West to reveal confused Ci and Sc, and sun breaks. I remembered the bit from American Beauty about beauty and a benevolent force. Except that there isn't a benevolent force - there doesn't have to be because there isn't a malevolent force either. A beautiful sight like that is a free gift to be appreciated. Take it, there'll be more to come.

Saturday, September 24, 2005

Cold and clear early in the morning, more cloud in the afternoon but warm for a while, cool in the evening.

Went into town - for an hour or two it was unexpectedly hot and I had a paranoid fear of being gunned down by killer cops for wearing a thick fleece and rucksack.

Friday, September 23, 2005

Clear sky but haze itm, calm; wind from S, thickening cloud, rain later, clear evening.

Thursday, September 22, 2005

Cool, damp start, hazily sunny later, rather nice but unmistakably early autumn.

Wednesday, September 21, 2005

Misty start, warm and sunny later. Research shows that it's quite normal to get a sea breeze 10 or 15 miles inland, and not unusual as many as 40 miles inland, which would certainly account for fresh smells on certain days here.

Got quite carried away with internet weather records. The snowy day in December 1981 that I remember can not have been both the 9th and a Friday. Either Wed 9th or Fri 11th: certainly the cold weather started on the night of the 8th, but then we didn't get any days off school, so it could well have been the Friday.

Saturday, September 17, 2005

Bright and cold today. Reminded me of early October 1991, when unemployment was just starting (contrast two years into it, October 1993, which I always remember as grey). It was a pivotal time. I still had hope of getting a job, but not for long.

Friday, September 16, 2005

Much colder today, with much untidier, bigger cumuli than you'd get in summer. Bright and pleasant though - but still the first noticeably 'cold' day of this winter.

Tuesday, September 13, 2005

Another rather nice cool sunny day.

Monday, September 12, 2005

Sun came out in the afternoon for a pleasant sunny afternoon, cool enough to need jacket done up. The first autumnal day, just as this morning was the first dark morning.

Sunday, September 11, 2005

Really dark, dim, damp grey day with rain. in the afternoon dim enough to be cosy when I put the lights on.

Saturday, September 10, 2005

Damp, grey day, raining in the morning when I did my shopping. Rather depressing, though there were some flashes of sunlight in the afternoon. I've got to do something about weekends - I'm getting back to the frame of mind where I used to go in to work at weekends out of boredom.

Thursday, September 08, 2005

Rather nice weather, bright and clear, hot but with cool breeze and noticeably lower sun. New Moon seen in the evening.

Monday, September 05, 2005

Humid weather, much too warm.

Sunday, September 04, 2005

Very hot today - a little high cloud, but not much filtering from that. Had another stroll through the woods on the way home in the afternoon.

Saturday, September 03, 2005

Quite hot at first, but gradually hazed over to a misty late afternoon.

Thursday, September 01, 2005

Appropriately hazy for the first day of autumn.

Wednesday, August 31, 2005

Very hot, little bit of haze in the morning but a beautiful blue afternoon for the last day of summer.

Tuesday, August 30, 2005

Beautiful weather - rather too hot - high cloud appearing at lunchtime but then clearing in the afternoon. Walking about was like swimming in a warm blue sea.

Monday, August 29, 2005

Beautiful weather, clouded over about five but was flawless with a couple of hours before that. A real burst of Summer to counteract my sad fin de siècle feelings yesterday.

Sunday, August 28, 2005

Beautiful weather - deep blue sky, soft but strong SW breeze. Went for a walk in the country park for an hour in the afternoon, thinking about the end of Summer. About half the blackberries are ripe.

Beautiful cool clear evening, both earlier when the sun was still shining on the leaves of the chestnut tree, and later when the sky was a profound deep clear blue.

Thursday, August 25, 2005

Very heavy thunderstorm from 4.20 to 5.20pm, hail, pelting rain, the works. Lent H. my spare umbrella.

Wednesday, August 24, 2005

A little like Friday and Monday - cool, bright start, pissing down by eleven, went on till the evening. At lunchtime went out in the rain for a walk.

Tuesday, August 23, 2005

Definitely the final act of Summer - noticed red berries appearing on the hedges last weekend, a symbolic shower of leaves blew at the car, when I walked round the lake at lunchtime there was a cool breath in the air.. I never used to feel like this at the end of the Summer. I used to like to watch Spring getting started, but never used to see this sad, doomed grandeur in late August.

Monday, August 22, 2005

Weather started out beautiful, but it was raining by eleven and it went on till 5pm.

Friday, August 19, 2005

As suspected by me, since seeing yesterday's high cloud, it rained from 10am ~ 8pm, solidly for 10 hours. Very heavy at times, particularly when I was walking across town between buses, having decided to go and work at home. It took something like an hour door-to-door, but it seemed like longer walking through the downpour and stuck in traffic in a bus full of damp, steaming people. Wish I'd stayed in my nice dry office!

Did yoga then finished off some work while my tea cooked. Interesting being able to do that, might make more use of it.

Thursday, August 18, 2005

Same as yesterday but without the cool breeze. High cloud in the evening too.

Some definite signs of the end of summer now: more yellow leaves than there were on Tuesday, the conkers on the tree outside have been getting quite mature this past week, acorns are fully-formed on oak trees. This year we'd barely got going with summer before it started finishing, though I wouldn't be surprised if we got some hot weather next month.

Wednesday, August 17, 2005

Beautiful hot clear summer's day, with cool breeze. Beautiful calm evening and night after the long summer day, and a lovely low yellow moon waxing full, the last moon of summer.

Tuesday, August 16, 2005

Thought I saw a few yellow leaves this cool, clear morning. It's been bright the last few days but only in the afternoon today did it get too hot to wear a coat.

Sunday, August 14, 2005

Interesting weather with bands of showers. in the afternoon went out, in the bright inter-shower sunshine, for a brisk walk to the Co-op.

Saturday, August 13, 2005

Brief sunny period early in the morning while I was shopping, wind and rain later.

Tuesday, August 09, 2005

Not so bright as Sun and yesterday, but quite cool when the sun was in.

Realised we're as far from the solstice now as we are on May 5th - last week and today I thought I detected an autumnal slant in the afternoon sun, which in previous years I haven't noticed earlier than c. 18th (equiv Apr 25th).

Monday, August 08, 2005

Again bright, with hot sun, but cool N wind. Rather pleasant, a bit like being at the seaside.

Beautiful calm evening, spent some time admiring the various greens and yellows of the chestnut tree outside against the deep blue sky. Children playing nearby, recreating the sound of summer holiday evenings circa 1977.

Sunday, August 07, 2005

Weather fresh with strong N wind.

Wednesday, August 03, 2005

Pouring with rain when I went out at 6.45, but was fine before ten, never mind eleven.

Beautiful afternoon with big white-grey clouds and deep blue sky. Waiting for the bus home, the clouds and sky together with the dark green summer trees and white buildings made me feel like I was on the cover of an SF novel, one of those impossibly pure paintings.

Sunday, July 31, 2005

Grey, quiet day. Short shower of rain about 7pm.

Thursday, July 28, 2005

Some thundery rain in the evening - didn't live up to the promise of the huge, hard-topped clouds that'd bubbled up in the afternoon. But in Birmingham a tornado has injured 19 people. Genuine tornadoes very rare in Britain, especially in cities.

Wednesday, July 27, 2005

Another wet day, none too warm either.

Sunday, July 24, 2005

Rained most of the day, but cleared to a mellow, sunny evening.

Saturday, July 23, 2005

Cloudy, grey day ideal for staying in and fiddling with tapes.

Wednesday, July 20, 2005

To Southend. Very clear air afforded fine views of Kent. Dartford bridge towers also clearly visible.

Monday, July 18, 2005

Beautiful hot day.

Sunday, July 17, 2005

Beautiful weather, cloudless till about 4pm.

Friday, July 15, 2005

Very hot again today.

Thursday, July 14, 2005

Very hot.

Wednesday, July 13, 2005

Weather had got very hot by the end of my walk (1pm).

Tuesday, July 12, 2005

Beautiful hot, clear day. Walked to Asda through the country park - from the hilltop field a huge sky with grand sweep of cirrus across it.

Monday, July 11, 2005

Some nice weather at times. Fierce sun.

Sunday, July 10, 2005

Very calm, warm, quiet summer day. Enjoyed green and gold light seen through leaves of chestnut tree outside back window.

Saturday, July 09, 2005

Not very summery in the morning - grey and cold. Weather warmed up in the afternoon: strolled up to the Co-op for a Radio Times.

Tuesday, July 05, 2005

Really started raining about 4.30, went on all evening. Dark, cold, not like summer at all.

Monday, July 04, 2005

Real 'rain before seven, fine before eleven' weather, with heavy rain well into the morning. It may've stopped about eleven but it was at least 3pm before the sun came out. A bit like the weather on Aloysius, grey and wet with a powerful sun (Vega) occasionally breaking through the clouds.

Sunday, July 03, 2005

Weather's gone off these last few days - not chilly, but no feeling of summer heat either.

Wednesday, June 29, 2005

Quite good thunderstorm 3.45-4.30 - we only caught the fringe of it but there was the heaviest hail I've ever seen - some pellets 1" x ½" with opaque core and clear outer coating. Leaves pulled off trees by same.

Incidentally quite a good storm last night too, around 11.30pm.

Tuesday, June 28, 2005

Quite chilly in the morning, turning hot later.

Monday, June 27, 2005

Hot but with pleasant cool breeze. Detoured my walk home through the edge of the country park. Thinking about it, with the dry weather I could walk across the whole park, and save 15 minutes.

Sunday, June 26, 2005

Eventually turned out quite a nice day, though not so hot as in the week.

Saturday, June 25, 2005

Grey, damp, much cooler.

Friday, June 24, 2005

Very hot till 2pm when we had a fantastic thunderstorm. It was preceded in classic fashion by cold gusts and passed right over the campus. Went upstairs to watch from a corridor window - many forks, branches and sheets of lightning. Then the rain started and the thunder got positively apocalyptic - great ripping cracks and explosions. By 3pm the sun was out and it was cooler.

Definitely the best storm since that one I waited all one long summer day for back in Mugsborough. (Ha, I see that was also Friday, June 24th).

There've been many fruitless waits in my career as a thunder fan, but one sign never disappoints: the pre-storm cold gusts. If you get those, you're in for a show.

Btw, realised why June 24th is called Midsummer Eve: June 25th is one of the quarter days.

Thursday, June 23, 2005

Even hotter today - sun very powerful at only 7.40am. This time of year, in the early morning you can pretend it's 3pm on a bright winter afternoon (the low sun).

Wednesday, June 22, 2005

Very hot today - hot enough again to have to stand in the shade at the bus stop on the way home.

Answer from the Essex Libraries 'answers' service, identifying the hot office/iceberg poem I've been trying to remember these last few hot days. It's The Ice-Cart by Wilfrid Wilson Gibson.

Tuesday, June 21, 2005

Hot again but easier to tolerate - drier perhaps?

Monday, June 20, 2005

Unpleasantly warm and muggy.

Sunday, June 19, 2005

Very hot and clear. Quite tolerable inside though, with a warm, fragrant through breeze. Admittedly, I can hear more of the neighbours' garden conversations than I'd like, but at least here I can have the windows open before 9pm. At the old flat it was always way too noisy and fume-ridden for that.

Saturday, June 18, 2005

Beautiful day - often cloudless, and so hot even by 8am that I did my shopping in a black t-shirt.
Beautiful day - often cloudless, and so hot even by 8am that I did my shopping in a black t-shirt.

Sunday, June 12, 2005

Dark, damp grey day.

Saturday, June 11, 2005

Really quite chilly today.

Friday, June 10, 2005

Rather colder today.

Wednesday, June 08, 2005

Hot sunlight with cool breeze today, very pleasant.

Friday, June 03, 2005

Impressive rainless cold-front squall about 6pm.

Monday, May 30, 2005

Heavy rain at times today, so had an indoor Bank Holiday making the most of my new network connection.

Saturday, May 28, 2005

Gorgeous hot, sunny day with intense blue sky and strong, cooling breeze.

Friday, May 27, 2005

Very hot indeed. Router arrived at work - great! but had to tote it home in the heat. Then had to wait an hour for S. at the station due to horrendous delays, but had water, shade, book and chill-out MP3s, so didn't come close to losing my temper.

Thursday, May 26, 2005

Much warmer today.

Monday, May 23, 2005

Weather really rather nice at times, particularly in the afternoon with warmth, sun, wind and big white cauliflower cumuli.

Saturday, May 21, 2005

Rainy, windy weather confirmed my tendency away from going into town.

Thursday, May 19, 2005

Home in the rain, massive traffic jam.

Tuesday, May 17, 2005

Really rather cold in the morning and at lunchtime.

Monday, May 16, 2005

Really rather cold in the morning and at lunchtime.

Sunday, May 15, 2005

Bright weather with fair-weather cumuli in the morning, and beautiful clear evening.

Saturday, May 14, 2005

Sunny but with high cloud.

Thursday, May 12, 2005

Wind went round to the East, so skies were less crystal clear than of late, but it was still a beautiful bright day with a cutting wind. in the afternoon the heat of the sun enabled me to bask at the bus stop, with my temperature moderated by the cool wind. Delightful!

Wednesday, May 11, 2005

Cool, bright and clear again.

Tuesday, May 10, 2005

Beautiful bright day again, but again a cold NW wind.

Sunday, May 08, 2005

Appreciated another day of bright showery weather.

Saturday, May 07, 2005

Excellent weather - strong NW wind with bright sun, huge cumuli and heavy showers.

Sunday, May 01, 2005

some good rumbles of thunder at lunchtime.

Thursday, April 28, 2005

Beautiful sunny weather. It's been nice enough for a stroll round the lake every lunchtime this week. Ducklings have been much in evidence.
One of those April days - windy but not cold - which remind me of campus in the 3rd year (1991), with the light green leaves against grey sky or buildings. Quite a pleasant association.

Sunday, April 24, 2005

Another beautiful start to the day, but clouded over again later.

Thursday, April 21, 2005

Beautiful calm, clear sunny morning like yesterday. At lunchtime that smell of the sea that I've noticed before here in Dulchester. Clouded over after a bit in the afternoon, wind changed, no more sea smell.
Gorgeous weather, hardly a cloud in the sky all day, with fantastic 'full colour' feeling whenever I was outside. At lunchtime: the lake, the daisies, the blackthorn blossom, the grass. In the morning: the great green dome of a chestnut tree by the bus station. In the afternoon: green slopes on campus, new oak leaves. In the evening: the bright leaves of the chestnut outside my window, and a clear evening sky.

Tuesday, April 19, 2005

Beautiful weather, both in the morning (calm and sunny) and at lunchtime (breezy big-cumuli spring day ambience which doesn't need much sun to be enjoyable).

Monday, April 18, 2005

Raining hard in the morning - very pleasant bus journey listening to Every Day Is Like Sunday and Death of a Disco Dancer with the rain streaming down the bus windows. One of those dismal occasions that become cosy because one feels warm and relaxed.
Weather completely cleared up later, turning into a sunny, big-cumuli, breezy afternoon and a beautiful clear evening.

Sunday, April 17, 2005

An intensely bright day, really calm and clear.

Saturday, April 16, 2005

Up at seven and off, in a fog, to charge the battery and get groceries. Sun came out and by 8.30 I was buying a fan in B&Q, on a beautiful spring morning. Going to Sainsburys at 9.15, I was reminded of the Saturday mornings of childhood - sun and drying dew.

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

Beautiful weather in the morning - clear, sunny and mellow, like an intimation of summer.

Sunday, April 10, 2005

Weather warmer, sun out most of the day, clear post-sunset sky with a few clouds drifting calmly across it.

Saturday, April 09, 2005

Beautiful weather in the morning, cool and bright with huge cumuli. Walked into town, admiring green willows in the field on the side of the road. For the first time in a while felt that this is a nice part of Dulchester to live in.

Friday, April 08, 2005

Even colder, with strong North wind. Heating on again this weekend, indicating we've had a whole week of this cold. Spring greenery coming on fine in the sun, though.

Thursday, April 07, 2005

Good showery weather.

Wednesday, April 06, 2005

Perhaps some spring-like strong afternoon sunlight on the way home. Green leaves have been appearing on the hedge at the back of the flat for the last week.

Friday, April 01, 2005

Still very cold. Good to see the leaves opening on the chestnut tree outside, though.

Thursday, March 31, 2005

Again very cold.

Wednesday, March 30, 2005

Still very cold - and raining in the morning.

Tuesday, March 29, 2005

Unexpectedly cold today.

Sunday, March 20, 2005

Weather much cooler than yesterday.

Saturday, March 19, 2005

Warm again, sunny in the morning but hazing over in the afternoon.

Friday, March 18, 2005

Another beautiful day.

Thursday, March 17, 2005

Beautiful warm sunny day, the first to be a real spring day as opposed to a day having spring-like elements. Very pleasant afternoon with the windows open.

Monday, March 14, 2005

To Felixstowe in the morning. Strolled along the front admiring the many bright sun-sparks on the silver-grey sea, and thinking 'This is better than being shut up in any office'. After a whole week off I seem to be really chilling.

Saturday, March 12, 2005

Beautiful day, cold and bright.

Friday, March 11, 2005

To Rendlesham. Enjoyed the moist forest air and sound of wind in the branches. Then on to Aldeburgh: offshore wind so strong and cold that I cut my beach stroll very short indeed, opting instead for a car picnic.

Wednesday, March 09, 2005

Walking into town in the morning felt as if Spring was here - everything had a dusty brightness.

Tuesday, March 08, 2005

Walked back through the park. Lake very pleasant to look at, big half-formed grey cumuli drifting past, ducks and moorhens going about their business, trees rustling in the wind.

Saturday, March 05, 2005

Nice weather again.

Friday, March 04, 2005

Again it started snowing during the bus journey to work, again it came on heavily, but this time it snowed thickly all morning, leading to student frolics, snowmen etc.

Thursday, March 03, 2005

On way to work, it began to snow as we passed the bookshop, and 5 min later the roads and paths were visibly white, and 10 min later everything was bright white. Perhaps ½" of snow in 10 minutes. As so often these last few weeks, it didn't last more than a few hours, but it was impressive. Haven't seen serious snow in March before.

In the evening very cold indeed but very clear, Sirius like a blue jewel, Rigel, Betelgeuse, Capella all glittering away too.

Wednesday, March 02, 2005

Rather damp, very cold, altogether unpleasant. Glad to get home and warm up.

Tuesday, March 01, 2005

Possibly a hint of spring while I was waiting for the bus in the afternoon. It was drizzling, but it wasn't dark, crocuses were coming up and there was a sense of 'spaciousness' which I associate with spring and summer.

Monday, February 28, 2005

Very cold and clear in the morning - -2-°C by the display thermometer down by the station. Later, iron-grey sky with dry cold, and some snow late in the afternoon.

Sunday, February 27, 2005

Bright sun and an inch of snow on the ground in the morning.

Friday, February 25, 2005

More snow in the morning, but it didn't 'lay'.

Thursday, February 24, 2005

Went out shopping - got caught in a blizzard on the bypass. Before the gritters came out it was horrendous - and very cold.

Wednesday, February 23, 2005

Half an inch to an inch of snow on the ground in the morning. Went out well wrapped up, expecting bus chaos, but at the bus stop footprints showed people had successfully got on a bus! In fact journey only took 40 minutes - as timetabled. Obviously half term far more influential than weather.

Tuesday, February 22, 2005

Heavy snow at times today, but none of it 'layed'.

Monday, February 21, 2005

Snow at times today, though it didn't result in anything more than another light covering.

Sunday, February 20, 2005

Very light covering of snow in the afternoon.

Saturday, February 19, 2005

A little warmer today. Bright and sunny till late in the afternoon; a few flakes of snow in the morning.

Thursday, February 17, 2005

Cold again and very still.

Wednesday, February 16, 2005

Weather very cold again. Keeping me warm were an unusual number of mutual gazes from attractive people.

Monday, February 14, 2005

Weather dry and icy cold with NW wind.

Saturday, February 12, 2005

Cold, windy day, turning bright, colder and windier later. Very much my sort of weather.

Thursday, February 10, 2005

Warmer, and rainy.

Wednesday, February 09, 2005

Little bit warmer, some more hazy sunshine. This week is the equivalent of the sloping sunlight one gets about August 20th. On Monday, looking across the lake, I thought of that oddly warm February 23rd we spent fishing in the park in 1985.

Tuesday, February 08, 2005

Cold, still and foggy.

Monday, February 07, 2005

Cold and clear. Walked round lake at lunchtime for first time this year. Hazy sunshine coming across the water, like an intimation of summer.

Thursday, February 03, 2005

Calm and grey - in the afternoon a hint of that 'spring is coming' vegetation smell. In the evening very calm indeed with a layer of fog, just about moving in very, very slow eddies.

Monday, January 31, 2005

Coming out of work saw beautiful red-edged clouds in the sunset, pale, white wine coloured sky.

Friday, January 28, 2005

Heavy rain at times in the morning and at lunchtime.

Thursday, January 27, 2005

Slightly less cold, but wet.

Wednesday, January 26, 2005

Again very cold - possibly colder.

Tuesday, January 25, 2005

Very cold today. But the double glazing was completed. I feel warmer already.

Monday, January 24, 2005

Really very cold. Snow about 0745, and more showers up until lunchtime.

Sunday, January 23, 2005

Again cold.

Saturday, January 22, 2005

Again very cold.

Friday, January 21, 2005

Very cold and clear today.

Tuesday, January 18, 2005

Weather had turned very cold indeed when I came out at 9pm. Clear though, with Sirius glittering with winter-warming blue fire.

Thursday, January 13, 2005

Very cold in the morning.

Tuesday, January 11, 2005

Wet and windy weather.

Monday, January 03, 2005

I'm getting into the 'new year' thing - I caught myself wondering when Easter was. Also I think the sun's a little higher in the sky than it was.

Sunday, January 02, 2005

Went out for a walk in the afternoon in the woods - just a 45-minute stroll and a look at the clouds drifting near the westering sun.
