Woke up to find it snowing heavily. Had a very pleasant morning with the Osskil bit of A Wizard of Earthsea, watching the snow fall.Fr a change it was perfectly quiet here. I could hear the snow sifting
onto the windowsill. Turned to rain quite suddenly about eleven. I'd meant to go into town first thing: as soon as I saw the buses were running I had an early lunch and went out into a chaos of slush, with heavy rain on a cold southerly wind.

Bright and sunny till about four, but very cold. Finally managed to see Venus in daylight (and through double glazing) 17º altitude at 2.40pm, 37º left of the Sun, mag -3.9 against limiting magnitude -3.2, so quite a feat. It took binoculars to locate it, but it was easily visible with the naked eye thereafter.

Beautiful sunset with red-lit cirrocumulus. Have noticed the Moon being very high recently, and checking the ephemeris found it at 27°N declination (4°N lat.), actually 4 degrees higher than the Sun at the solstice. In fact it's predicted at 70° altitude tonight, whereas I wouldn't expect the Sun to beat (90-52=) 38°+23°=61°.

Huge explosion at oil depot in Hertfordshire this morning, visible by satellites, and (due to temperature inversion)
audible far off. I did hear something betwen 6am and 6.30 - assumed it was the neighbours. Said temperature inversion presumably responsible for low mist under clearish sky with bright sun. in the afternoon a 'sparkling mist', which cleared in time for an almost-daylight Venus Observed at 3.36pm.

Worked from home all day. A nice change, but tiring. For lunchtime exercise strolled over to the Co-op. On the way back there was a change in the weather, with dark rainy Sc clearing a little from the West to reveal confused Ci and Sc, and sun breaks. Everything turned dazzlingly bright and warm for a while, a like a Vega-break
on Aloysius.

Walked back from the station in the afternoon in warm sun and cold N wind. A great bay of sky opened up between headlands of altocumulus, with little cirrocumulus wavelets.
I remembered the bit from American Beauty about beauty and a benevolent force. Except that there isn't a benevolent force - there doesn't have to be because there isn't a malevolent force either. A beautiful sight like that is a free gift to be appreciated. Take it, there'll be more to come. Cold. N wind. Bright.

Misty start, warm and sunny later. Research shows that it's quite normal to get a sea breeze 10 or 15 miles inland, and not unusual as many as 40 miles inland, which would certainly account for fresh smells on certain days here. Got quite carried away with internet weather records. The snowy day in December 1981 that I remember can not have been both the 9th and a Friday. Either Wed 9th or Fri 11th: certainly the cold weather started on the night of the 8th, but then we didn't get any days off school, so it could well have been the Friday.

Beautiful weather - deep blue sky, soft but strong SW breeze. Went for a walk in the country park for an hour in the afternoon, thinking about the end of Summer. About half the blackberries are ripe. Beautiful cool clear evening, both earlier when the sun was still shining on the leaves of the chestnut tree, and later when the sky was a profound deep clear blue.

Definitely the final act of Summer - noticed red berries appearing on the hedges last weekend, a symbolic shower of leaves blew at the car, when I walked round the lake at lunchtime there was a cool breath in the air.. I never used to feel like this at the end of the Summer. I used to like to watch Spring getting started, but never used to see this sad, doomed grandeur in
late August.

As suspected by me, since seeing yesterday's high cloud, it rained from 10am ~ 8pm, solidly for 10 hours. Very heavy at times, particularly when I was walking across town between buses, having
decided to go and work at home. It took something like an hour
door-to-door, but it seemed like longer walking through the downpour and stuck in traffic in a bus full of damp, steaming people. Wish I'd stayed in my nice dry office!
Did yoga then finished off some work while my tea cooked. Interesting being able to do that, might make more use of it.
Thursday, August 18, 2005
Same as yesterday but without the cool breeze. High cloud in the evening too.
Some definite signs of the end of summer now: more yellow leaves than there were on Tuesday, the conkers on the tree outside have been getting quite mature this past week, acorns are fully-formed on oak trees. This year we'd barely got going with summer before it started finishing, though I wouldn't be surprised if we got some hot weather next month.

Not so bright as Sun and yesterday, but quite cool when the sun was in.
Realised we're as far from the solstice now as we are on May 5th - last week and today I thought I detected an autumnal slant in the afternoon sun,
which in previous years I haven't noticed earlier than c. 18th (equiv Apr 25th).
Monday, August 08, 2005
Again bright, with hot sun, but cool N wind. Rather pleasant, a bit like being at the seaside.
Beautiful
calm evening, spent some time admiring the various greens and yellows of the chestnut tree outside against the deep blue sky. Children playing nearby, recreating the sound of summer holiday evenings circa 1977.

Pouring with rain when I went out at 6.45, but was fine before ten, never mind eleven.
Beautiful afternoon with big white-grey clouds and deep blue sky. Waiting for the bus home, the clouds and sky together with the dark green summer trees and white buildings made me feel like I was on the cover of an SF novel, one of those
impossibly pure paintings.

Very hot till 2pm when we had a fantastic thunderstorm. It was preceded in classic fashion by cold gusts and passed right over the campus. Went upstairs to watch from a corridor window - many forks, branches and sheets of lightning. Then the rain started and the thunder got positively apocalyptic - great ripping cracks and explosions. By 3pm the sun was out and it was cooler. Definitely the best storm since that one I waited all one long summer day for back in Mugsborough. (Ha, I see that was also Friday, June 24th).
There've been many fruitless waits in my career as a thunder fan, but one sign never disappoints: the pre-storm cold gusts. If you get those, you're in for a show.
Btw, realised why June 24th is called Midsummer Eve: June 25th is one of the quarter days.

Gorgeous weather, hardly a cloud in the sky all day, with fantastic 'full colour' feeling whenever I was outside. At lunchtime: the lake, the daisies, the blackthorn blossom, the grass. In the morning: the great green dome of a chestnut tree by the bus station. In the afternoon: green slopes on campus, new oak leaves. In the evening: the bright leaves of the chestnut outside my window, and a clear evening sky.

Raining hard in the morning - very pleasant bus journey listening to Every Day Is Like Sunday and Death of a Disco Dancer with the rain streaming down the bus windows. One of those dismal occasions that become cosy because one feels warm and relaxed.
Weather completely cleared up later, turning into a sunny, big-cumuli, breezy afternoon and a beautiful clear evening.

On way to work, it began to snow as we passed the bookshop, and 5 min later the roads and paths were visibly white, and 10 min later everything was bright white. Perhaps ½" of snow in 10 minutes. As so often these last few weeks, it didn't last more than a few hours, but it was impressive. Haven't seen serious snow in March before.
In the evening very cold indeed but very clear, Sirius like a blue jewel, Rigel, Betelgeuse, Capella all glittering away too.
