Tuesday, December 28, 2004

Another cold, clear day. (Very cold indeed when I went out to post a letter in the evening).

Sunday, December 26, 2004

Another bright cold morning. Washing up after lunch, I found the bright sunlight pouring levelly into the kitchen quite unnerving - everything was intensely lit as if in a Buffy dream sequence.

Saturday, December 25, 2004

Up at 9.50 to wonderful bright sunlight and a cold, clear day. Instituted new tradition of Christmas cake with breakfast.

Thursday, December 23, 2004

Rather warmer today, with a fresh wind. Quite pleasant. Bus driver dressed as jester! Collecting for charity.

Wednesday, December 22, 2004

Not so cold today.

Tuesday, December 21, 2004

Again very cold.

Monday, December 20, 2004

Very cold again, with a very few tiny snowflakes early in the evening.

Sunday, December 19, 2004

Very cold today, and bright in the morning.

Saturday, December 18, 2004

Bright cold start, got a bit warmer and a lot duller later.

Thursday, December 16, 2004

Very dark morning, and getting darker: the street lights were still on at 10am. But at lunchtime things brightened up as if a front had passed, and I realised that it's been some days since we've seen the Sun.

Monday, December 13, 2004

Really cold today, with grey mist. The sort of day that makes being inside a positive pleasure.

Sunday, December 12, 2004

Very cold again.

Friday, December 10, 2004

Colder and dryer. Quite pleasant weather to be well wrapped up in.

Thursday, December 09, 2004

Cold and dry, with some sunshine.

Tuesday, December 07, 2004

Interesting misty day, always with sun filtering through and giving everything a warm glow. The sort of winter day that isn't depressing.

Sunday, December 05, 2004

Grey, cold day.

Saturday, December 04, 2004

Cold and dry, a good day to be inside.

Friday, December 03, 2004

Very cold and foggy.

Wednesday, December 01, 2004

Weather just right for the date: cold, dry and with very dark clouds.

Monday, November 29, 2004

Rather cold today.

Saturday, November 27, 2004

Dark day, suitable for staying in, which I did.

Tuesday, November 23, 2004

Mild and damp today.

Monday, November 22, 2004

Weather all mild again.

Saturday, November 20, 2004

Very cold today. Went out in the afternoon to the Co-op - sky had long 'scarf-like' clouds, like the Cold Waste.

Friday, November 19, 2004

Very cold and clear today (1°C by the thermometer clock on the accountants place down by the station).

Thursday, November 18, 2004

Cold and very wet today. Actually began snowing heavily while I was out shopping. We do sometimes get non-sticking snow as early as November, I suppose.

Wednesday, November 17, 2004

Bit warmer today, and interestingly windy.

Monday, November 15, 2004

Very cold and dry, not actually unpleasant.

Sunday, November 14, 2004

Even colder today.

Saturday, November 13, 2004

Very cold and clear weather. Went for a walk in the afternoon, through the country park. It was good to be roaming through woods and fields on a fine, cold late autumn afternoon, with a bright low sun.

Tuesday, November 09, 2004

Rainy day.

Tuesday, November 02, 2004

Damp, unpleasant day.

Tuesday, October 26, 2004

Rather nice weather - cold, but lovely yellow light.

Monday, October 25, 2004

Wore new jacket in anticipation of rain - disappointed to find that it didn't rain.

Saturday, October 23, 2004

Walked into town in the morning to buy waterproof jacket and overtrousers, for walking to work when it rains. It rained a bit while I was doing so.

Thursday, October 21, 2004

Bright, cold, windy day. Very pleasant compared to yesterday.

Wednesday, October 20, 2004

Pissing down with rain in the morning.

Monday, October 18, 2004

Weather's turned very cold.

Friday, October 15, 2004

Coming home had to wait 20 minutes in the cold and rain at the bus stop.

Thursday, October 14, 2004

Traffic so much better today, it was unbelievable. Odd, because in the morning it was raining, and you'd've expected more people to drive to work.

Wednesday, October 13, 2004

Heavy rain at times today, traffic dreadful.

Tuesday, October 12, 2004

Rain at times, fortunately either just before or just after my trips out.

Monday, October 11, 2004

Decidedly colder today - the East wind we've had for the past few days was stronger.

Monday, October 04, 2004

Raining in the morning, bus came early, sprinted and caught it. Surprise! I have become extremely fit. Weather cleared later to a gorgeous still afternoon with long golden light, a bit like a late evening in summer.

Saturday, September 25, 2004

Cold and bright again.

Saturday, September 18, 2004

Cloudy afternoon clearing to a beautiful sunset, with bits of cloud lying like isles in a fabulous deep blue sea. Then the New Moon hove into view (this one will be the Harvest Moon when it's full).

Thursday, September 16, 2004

Noticeably cold in the morning, with that hard, bright feel that reminds me of October 1999, and which I associate very strongly with anxiety.

Tuesday, September 14, 2004

Beautiful windy - quite windy - sunny day with big cumuli, showers and a fantastic bright rainbow as I got home.

Monday, September 13, 2004

Raining heavily in the morning.

Sunday, September 12, 2004

Beautiful early autumn day with wind, sun and medium cumuli.

Saturday, September 11, 2004

Interestingly windy weather.

Tuesday, September 07, 2004

Started off cool and cloudy, turned clear and pleasantly warm with a fresh East wind.

Sunday, September 05, 2004

Beautiful weather again, just a shame there's an impression of autumnal chill behind it.

Saturday, September 04, 2004

Wonderful weather again - but so nice as to deter me from any long daytime journey, it being so hot.

Went to Clacton for an evening stroll. I'd forgotten how beautiful the seaside can be in the dusk, full of reminders of childhood holiday evenings, and also seeming to show how huge the world really is. When I turned back to the land after taking in the immense sea and sky, the houses on the straight seafront seemed like tiny parts of an intricate computer simulation stretching away into the distance.

Friday, September 03, 2004

Wonderful warm, calm, hazy day.

Wednesday, September 01, 2004

Same weather as yesterday, but seeming quite different, like a fine early autumn day.

Tuesday, August 31, 2004

Last day of Summer. Warm and calm, with a beautiful golden full moon visible on my way home in the evening. Just a shame we had so little summer weather to come before it.

Saturday, August 28, 2004

Weather beautiful in the morning - blue sky, lots of cumuli, sun not too hot.

Thursday, August 26, 2004

Amazingly, no rain today!

Tuesday, August 24, 2004

More rain, mostly in the afternoon though. For once I carried my umbrella all the way to work and did need it on the way home.

Monday, August 23, 2004

Rain stopped in time for me to go out at lunchtime and view yet another flat.

Saturday, August 21, 2004

Beautiful cool sunny day. Observed that autumnal slant of the light you get in the last third of August. Summer's coming to an end already - with so much rain it seems like it never really started. Wouldn't be surprised if we got a hot September.

Friday, August 20, 2004

Thundering again - a wonderful stormy week we've had, remnants of a tropical storm I believe.

Wednesday, August 18, 2004

Great thunderstorm about 0230 today. I've come a long way since I used to lie awake listening for *10 thunder and being afraid. 28 years old I was - aaah! No, I was about 7 when I used to do that. It's good to have an example of how I can get over my fears. I wonder if it explains why deep rumbling noise annoys me most?

Tuesday, August 17, 2004

Incredibly heavy rain at lunchtime, like the sea pouring out of the clouds; fortunately I was in the car.

Saturday, August 14, 2004

Beautiful day - cloudless but not unpleasantly hot.

Wednesday, August 11, 2004

Rain coming down like stair rods in the morning. When it stopped we had another very unpleasant, hot humid day.

Tuesday, August 10, 2004

Was glad I had a car in the morning, because it was coming down like stair rods. When it stopped we had another very unpleasant, hot humid day.

Monday, August 09, 2004

Fantastic thunderstorm just after I got to work: sky as dark as slate as it approached from the SE, oddly flat clouds almost like the 'pile of plates' formation. Very hot and humid all day.

Sunday, August 08, 2004

Beautiful weather again, with a pleasant breeze.

Saturday, August 07, 2004

Blazingly hot day. Spent most of it keeping cool. There's something oddly luxurious about the cool shade of drawn curtains on a hot summer day.

Wednesday, August 04, 2004

Beautiful weather again, with a pleasant breeze.

Sunday, August 01, 2004

Low cloud prevented the (very hot) sun from breaking through till lunchtime, so today was pleasantly cooler.

Saturday, July 31, 2004

Much too hot again.

Friday, July 30, 2004

Very hot and clear again.

Wednesday, July 28, 2004

Gorgeous weather, which prompted me to re-read Burmese Days when I got home.

Friday, July 23, 2004

Beautiful hot weather, like summer should've been so far.

Monday, July 19, 2004

Beautiful weather.

Saturday, July 17, 2004

Excellent thunderstorm in the morning - got really dark, and rain came down in torrents.

Friday, July 16, 2004

Rained in the morning, quite heavily, but cleared a bit later, becoming rather hot.

Thursday, July 15, 2004

Much warmer today. I went on an impulse to the Co-op , and when I came out the heat took me by surprise. Particularly as it wasn't a very clear day.

Wednesday, July 14, 2004

Went to Rendlesham Forest even though it was raining. Rain cleared up on the way.

Sunday, July 11, 2004

Cooler with high grey cloud. Think all this unseasonal weather is bringing me down a bit - it's like the feeling I get in October, but come early. I'm hoping we get some hot weather later in the summer to restore my good mood.

Saturday, July 10, 2004

Rather warmer and brighter than of late.

Friday, July 09, 2004

Cool, grey day with short spells of drizzle.

Wednesday, July 07, 2004

Spot-on weather forecast today: bright start with wind and thin cirrus. Went to Felixstowe and walked North up the prom in warm sunshine appreciating the large waves. As I came back down the wind increased and it got greyer and the waves got bigger. I had parked near South Point and as I neared the point I was wondering if it was quite safe to continue. When I got to the point and turned back, I found it was difficult to walk against the wind, so it was lucky I only had about 400 yards to go back to the car.

Later in the afternoon the wind really got up and it began to rain heavily - for about 8 hours so far. Unusual to get lots of rain on an East wind here.

All this was perfectly according to the weather forecast. And I was pleased I timed my visit to Felixstowe so well, with one half in sunny seaside weather and one half in interesting stormy weather.

Tuesday, July 06, 2004

Hot, bright day with cool breeze.

Monday, July 05, 2004

Up as early as 7.30 to a beautiful cloudless morning.

Saturday, July 03, 2004

Bright morning. Interesting weather later, kept raining heavily but only in brief bursts.

Sunday, June 27, 2004

Some good sunny intervals today, and also some impressive heavy rain.

Saturday, June 26, 2004

Untidy sort of weather - light rain, high smooth grey clouds.

Friday, June 25, 2004

Beautiful bright day with big cumuli.

Thursday, June 24, 2004

Cold and windy but also sunny at times.

Wednesday, June 23, 2004

The weather was very windy with lots of rain, which always invigorates me. Only drawback therewith is

(Thursday) - well, whatever it was, the phone rang just as I wrote that.

Monday, June 21, 2004

Some impressive cumulo-nimbus clouds in the afternoon, though only a rumble or two of thunder. A beautiful rainbow too. And a lovely New Moon later.

Sunday, June 20, 2004

Strange sort of day, cold and unseasonal. Had to have the fan heater on in the morning.

Saturday, June 19, 2004

More fresh bright weather. In the morning deep blue sky and hundreds of small cumuli.

Friday, June 18, 2004

Rather fresh today with a smell of the sea on the wind.

Thursday, June 17, 2004

Cloudier, windier and cooler today.

Wednesday, June 16, 2004

More cloud today, but very hot when the sun was out.

Tuesday, June 15, 2004

Absolutely beautiful morning, clear as crystal.

Monday, June 14, 2004

Really beautiful summer evening now - clear and with all shades of colour from deep blue to apricot. In some ways I will miss this place, particularly the four-directional views.

Sunday, June 13, 2004

Lovely weather again - bit cooler and more pleasant.

Thursday, June 10, 2004

Very warm, and humid.

Wednesday, June 09, 2004

Again very warm. Had the windows open all night.

Tuesday, June 08, 2004

Transit of Venus today, which I've been waiting for since about 1978. Duly observed with eclipse viewer from five years ago. Venus moved across the lower part of the Sun from left to right, from about 7 o'clock at 0700 to about 5 o'clock at 1100. It was quite clearly a disc, a small black circle perhaps of the proportion of a pea to a dinner plate or a marble to a dustbin lid. (That clears up my 'should Venus be visible as a disc') question. I let C. and D. at work have a look through my viewer.

Oddly the disc thing brought home how far away Venus is. If you know it's 8,000 miles across but it looks like a tiny circle, it must be really far away. Things that just appear as points don't give the same impression.

Monday, June 07, 2004

Hot day, lovely warm 'spacious' evening. When I'm not catastrophising, I like this place.

Friday, June 04, 2004

Warm, damp day.

Tuesday, June 01, 2004

Misty, damp day.

Monday, May 31, 2004

Very warm and sunny again. Have really had the 'spacious' feeling this long weekend: with all the windows open, the sitting outside etc.

Sunday, May 30, 2004

Bright sunny weather most of the day.

Friday, May 28, 2004

Still warm today, with a South wind.

Thursday, May 27, 2004

Reverse weather to the last few days: cloudy in the morning, clearing to clear sky and 'seaside' conditions in the afternoon (by which I mean warm sun, fresh breeze).

Tuesday, May 25, 2004

Another gorgeous morning, followed by a cloudier day.

Monday, May 24, 2004

Beautiful cloudless morning, which was welcome as I felt tired. Also a warm, peaceful evening, even though it had clouded over rather by then.

Sunday, May 23, 2004

Again cool but bright.

Saturday, May 22, 2004

Cool but bright with big white clouds. And beautiful clear evening sky. Sometimes I really like this flat. I've got sky views 360° if I care to look at them.

Friday, May 21, 2004

Weather much colder, with NE wind, and rain in the morning. Cleared to a bright afternoon with cold wind and hot sun, a bit like being at the beach.

Thursday, May 20, 2004

Cooler today, and cloudy with heavy rain early in the evening.

Wednesday, May 19, 2004

Really beautiful weather today. Did some height calculations with building shadows.

Am really enjoying these warm evenings. I have all the windows open, and if the noise gets too much, I put Radio 3 on.

Monday, May 17, 2004

Gorgeous weather.

Sunday, May 16, 2004

Beautiful weather - had all the windows open in the afternoon and evening. Even heard a cuckoo.

Saturday, May 15, 2004

Beautiful sunny day.

Friday, May 14, 2004

Very pleasant weather though; walking home it was golden and hazy and exactly the right temperature for the clothes I had on - like walking through warm water.

Thursday, May 13, 2004

Beautiful spring day, with daisies and may blossom and intense dark green grass.

Monday, May 10, 2004

Everything feels very damp, and indeed a white mist has come down. Unusual. I half expect my pen to furrow the paper like the Collector's once the rains begin.

Sunday, May 09, 2004

Another grey, dull day with some drizzle in the afternoon.

Saturday, May 08, 2004

Grey, uninviting day, so stayed in and watched Buffy while sorting out my paper trays.

Friday, May 07, 2004

Some good heavy rain in the evening.

Thursday, May 06, 2004

Unusually walked to work, having driven yesterday. I thought it'd be a good idea to put a walk in the bank on a day when it wasn't raining.

Tuesday, May 04, 2004

More heavy rain today.

Monday, May 03, 2004

Rained heavily almost all day. Had to go out and pump up the car tyres during it. When I got back inside I did enjoy the feeling of being indoors while it was dark and rainy outside.

Saturday, May 01, 2004

'Bright white' weather today, rather humid. Walking along Chester Road to get to the park, was taken aback by combination of white sky, big red brick wall and prominent corner brick house. I got an extraordinary impression of visiting grandparents as a kid. Not a negative impression, but a strange one.

Wednesday, April 28, 2004

Great thunderstorm last night. Everyone was complaining about how much sleep they'd lost. I on the other hand only woke up once. Had flash of insight - usually the neighbours only have to cough for me to wake up, it must be only noises that I think I should be able to stop that disturb me.

Sunday, April 25, 2004

Another windows-open day, a bit cloudier than yesterday.

Saturday, April 24, 2004

Gorgeous weather today. Had the windows open all afternoon and evening.

Friday, April 23, 2004

A fine warm day today. Particularly nice walking home. It's great how quickly one forgets how sere and dull everything was in the winter, now there's leaves and blossom everywhere, and blue sky.

Wednesday, April 21, 2004

Rather a lot of rain today, fortunately almost all after I'd got home.

Tuesday, April 20, 2004

Bright morning with strong sunshine. Enjoyed walking underneath the blossoming trees on the way down from the car park at work. White flowers against deep blue sky, quite sublime.
The view from my bedroom window has had its spring transformation into leafy loveliness. It's so pleasing to look out and see greenness instead of bare branches.

Sunday, April 18, 2004

Interesting rainy weather, which made it cosy and enjoyable to be working inside.

Friday, April 16, 2004

Really beautiful weather in the afternoon. Walking home had feeling of opening up to the spring after the long winter.

Wednesday, April 14, 2004

Wonderful golden weather, slightly hazy.

Tuesday, April 13, 2004

Very damp morning, with a sort of hazy brightness later.

Saturday, April 10, 2004

Up at 5.15 to go to London for the wedding. It was a dark grey drizzly morning, rather reminiscent of that grey day I went into London in Oct 1987 - I ended up meeting more than 1 gay bloke this time though.

The sun made an appearance about 7pm, coming home I could see the sunset in my mirrors on the A120. Eventually home, very tired, at 7.50 pm.

Friday, April 09, 2004

Golden day.

Wednesday, April 07, 2004

Colder today, with some impressive cumulonimbus clouds in the afternoon and evening.

Monday, April 05, 2004

Fine bright morning, later very windy with cold heavy showers. My standby umbrella blew inside out on the way home, but I used the wind to blow it right side in again.

Sunday, April 04, 2004

Beautiful spring weather in the morning. Poplar trees over to the West have got green leaves on them: odd to see them greeny-brown after being stark black for the last five months.

Came on to rain in the afternoon, cosily beating against the windows.

Wednesday, March 31, 2004

Once again, beautiful weather most of the day - clouded over in the afternoon.

Tuesday, March 30, 2004

Beautiful weather again. Clear blue sky all day, and now after sunset still clear, but a wonderful dull orange-rose on the western horizon, shading upwards through wine-coloured light to blue.

Monday, March 29, 2004

Clocks having gone forward, coming out of work in the afternoon was surprised to find everything blue, yellow and warm rather than red, orange and chilly. I know I said the same last year, but the feeling of 'spaciousness' conveyed by the clear blue sky, warm wind and birdsong shouldn't go unrecorded.

Friday, March 26, 2004

Beautiful morning - warm, sunny, birds singing. An authentic bit of Spring weather.

Wednesday, March 24, 2004

Sun and big white clouds.

Tuesday, March 23, 2004

Sun and showers again.

Monday, March 22, 2004

Heavy showers and sun again. Sun in the morning, showers in the afternoon; got soaked by very heavy, cold, vertical rain on way home.

Sunday, March 21, 2004

Heavy showers with sun in between. Couple of good rainbows.

Tuesday, March 16, 2004

Warm; blue sky and daffodils in the afternoon. Pleasant, muddy spring smell. Some nice patches of clear, blue-green sky at sunset - sun setting noticeably further round to the west than before.

Monday, March 15, 2004

Mild, windy day.

Sunday, March 14, 2004

Chilly, rainy day.

Saturday, March 13, 2004

Much warmer and brighter today. On way back from wedding rehearsal stopped to admire stars in dark country sky: simply dripping with stars in Orion region, sure I saw 7 Pleiades. Could see down to 29½°S (bottom of 'coathanger' in Canis Major) without even trying, and there was a lot of blank sky below that.

Friday, March 12, 2004

Gloomy, rainy day.

Thursday, March 11, 2004

Unexpectedly cold.

Monday, March 08, 2004

Big blue and white spring day. Mae hi'n braf the Welsh would say, 'brave' a good word for today's weather.

Sunday, March 07, 2004

Another rainy day.

Saturday, March 06, 2004

Bit brighter, less rain.

Friday, March 05, 2004

Rainy, cold day.

Thursday, March 04, 2004

Damp, grey, misty day.

Tuesday, March 02, 2004

Another bright cold day. Deceptive weather though, bright and warm inside but still wintry cold outside, with bare branches except for blossoming blackthorn.

Sunday, February 29, 2004

Sun high enough to make spring seem a real possibility (noticed blackthorn blossom out yesterday).

Friday, February 27, 2004

Walked to work through the snow.

Thursday, February 26, 2004

Cold, clear day. My walk home was in sunlight at least as far as Tescos. Spring's on its way. That fresh smell was in the air in the evenings a week ago. These phenomena are sort of the opposite to the first slanted sunlight towards the end of August.

Wednesday, February 25, 2004

Very cold, but bright.

Tuesday, February 24, 2004

On the road by 8.30, got to Walthamstow at 11, through rain and snow. Away at 12.30, took the N Circular and the A13 to Lakeside, which I reached in about an hour in driving rain.

Sunday, February 22, 2004

Cold grey wet day, clearing at sunset to show Venus and the New Moon bright against the dark blue sky.

Friday, February 20, 2004

Cold, dry, grey, icy wind again.

Thursday, February 19, 2004

Dry and very cold, with icy NE wind, big grey clouds and patches of blue sky.

Wednesday, February 18, 2004

Grey and gloomy most of the day, but a clearer period late in the afternoon with areas of blue sky and those flattish, fragmented clouds that look like the top of Canada.

Monday, February 09, 2004

Very cold and dry. Fine night with bright, cold fiery stars. Phone call from S. wanting to know their names - and lots of other astro-facts, which I was pleased to supply, having been really interested in astronomy myself at his age, and indeed earlier.

Wednesday, February 04, 2004

Really worryingly mild weather. I wonder if Dubya still doesn't believe in global warming? I mean, I've been convinced since about 1980, but even the insurance companies started believing in it c. 1996. Wasn't that telling?

Tuesday, February 03, 2004

Windy with big grey stratocumulus. Quite enjoyable actually.

Monday, February 02, 2004

Mild, but hazy grey and raining hard in the morning.

Thursday, January 29, 2004

No new snow - but yesterday's had frozen hard, making walking treacherous. Very clear sky, so had a binocular sweep for Venus at lunchtime, but had to give up without seeing it.

Wednesday, January 28, 2004

Woke up to find a couple of inches of snow had fallen, as forecast. Hope I never lose the thrill of waking up to fresh snow. Now that I'm old and cautious, I duly wrapped up in extra socks and big boots, and walked to work.

Enjoyed watching the students frolicking in the snow at lunchtime. I like it when humans display animal behaviour in a positive way, it makes them seem understandable.

Began snowing again very hard about 4pm - strong North wind produced the closest thing to a blizzard I've ever seen. Quite exciting to walk home in. And I was glad I hadn't driven when I saw the traffic inching along. It was good to get homeinto the warm though. I'd forgotten how much extra effort walking in boots in the snow is.

Tuesday, January 27, 2004

Bright and cold again.

Monday, January 26, 2004

Bright, with a dry breathless cold. X. said it was like central China, where he'd just come back from.

Sunday, January 25, 2004

Bright and cold again.

Saturday, January 24, 2004

Bright, sunny cold day.

Thursday, January 22, 2004

Much colder; rained again, but it wasn't so dark.

Wednesday, January 21, 2004

Wet, dark, raining again.

Tuesday, January 20, 2004

Wet, miserable day.

Monday, January 19, 2004

Raining at 6am, carried on till 10am. Then sunny, but raining again at 10pm.

Thursday, January 15, 2004

Beautiful clear, calm morning at 6.50am, with a bright half moon setting.

Wednesday, January 14, 2004

Very cold and dark, with rain later.

Tuesday, January 13, 2004

Cold and bright.

Friday, January 09, 2004

Clear, bright and cold. Full Moon, stars and Venus quite splendid in the very dark blue sky at going-home time.

Wednesday, January 07, 2004

Weather cold and dark and sort of 'stagnant' in the morning, with drizzle. Cleared later and got colder: saw Venus just after 4pm when the sun had only just set.

Tuesday, January 06, 2004

Dark, rainy morning, but duly went for my pre-breakfast stroll. It brightened up considerably later - that January 'return of the cumuli' thing in evidence.

Sunday, January 04, 2004

Some long spells of sun today.

Saturday, January 03, 2004

Today cold and bright.

Thursday, January 01, 2004

Very dull, wet day.
