Came out of school at 3.40, thought 'that's a funny smoky smell, what is it? Yes, thunder - what, thunder in March?' 20 minutes later: thunder, lightning (at 2½ miles) and rain.

An amazing thing happened this morning. Went out at 7am, sky was grey. At 7.10 a slash of blue had appeared, at 7.15 a large gap had opened and at 7.25 the clouds were retreating rapidly into the East
