On train home, through the deep green countryside, and on the way up the hill from the station in the calm grey evening, and back in the living room with the window open and the chestnut tree outside, I felt a deep calm and peace, the sense of the vast, benign indifference of the universe. As if I'd opened the Box of Jhana and been healed as Hindle was. Because I have been a bit Hindle-like recently.
