Had to park up the road at the house. Got call to say completion had occurred. Slowly went round saying goodbye. I could by then have moved the car to right outside the house, but I thought no, it's a piece of Earl's Court I mustn't take to Maidenhead.

Perhaps fittingly, the space was empty when I left, as it was when I arrived. I walked down the path, I laid my hand on the pillar, I looked back once, and then I got in the car and drove away.
